Note this is at least the 2nd time within this week that two Malaysian cabinet ministers had publicly referred on "forward defence" of "a neighbouring country."
Their defence minister's "clear warning" is a followup on Dr Mahathir threat of a "bloodied nose" .
Having declared that Malaysia is not interested in referring
to PCA (formerly ICJ) for the water pricing resolution, it is apparent that Malaysia may likely enact its own law to by-pass the Water Agreement with Singapore, hence forcing the later to react.
The Malaysian government seems prepared to risk this path and test the Republic's resolve in carrying out her open-secret defence doctorine.Or it can be another wayang show of escalation considering the fact the Malaysia has limited her choice over water negotiation after having backed away from her earlier position to settle the water issue via peaceful means.
We are at risky times.

Face Military Might If M'sia's Sovereignty Breached, Says Najib
PRESS CONFERENCE...
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak answering questions at a press conference held at the Defence Ministry, Kuala Lumpur, Thursday. Also present is Armed Forces Chief Gen Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- Any attempt by any neighbouring country to violate Malaysia's sovereignty on the basis of "forward defence" will be handled by the armed forces with all its military might, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Thursday.
He said the armed forces warned any country with the "forward defence" doctrine not to try to breach the land, air and sea sovereignty of Malaysia.
"We'll use all our military power to defend our independence and sovereignty if any country wants to implement "forward defence" or launch pre-emptive strikes.
"We're giving a clear warning," he told a media conference at his ministry.
He said the armed forces had thorough military planning if Malaysia faced threats from a neighbouring country as a result of implementing a defence doctrine that breached Malaysia's sovereignty.
"We have our plans but there is no need for me to reveal them. If we are under threat, we'll respond," said Najib, without elaborating on the plans.
Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday exposed the plan by certain countries which wanted to use Malaysia as their battlefield in the event of war.
The Prime Minister said these countries believed that by adopting such a strategy, they would be able to prevent the horror of war from reaching their shores.
Najib said the "forward defence" concept was not something new to the armed forces and it did not pose a threat to any country if it was only a plan.
"But if the concept is executed and violated the sovereignty of this country, then we'll take action," he said.
Asked whether Malaysia need to increase its defence budget to acquire more modern weaponry systems, he said the armed forces would buy new weapon systems if the country's financial situation permitted it.
He, however, said the situation in Malaysia had not reached a war footing stage.
"We are not in a war footing yet to the extent of postponing developments in other fields to acquire weapons for the armed forces," he said.
Asked whether Malaysia needs to change its defence policy to handle the "forward defence" threat, Najib said the armed forces defence policy and strategies suited the current situation.
Asked whether the military intelligence had received reports or information on the "forward defence" plan by a neighbouring country, he said: "Maybe there is. If the Prime Minister says so, there must be some basis to it."
To a question whether foreign spies had sneaked into Malaysia to lay out the plans to use Malaysia as a battlefield, he said the armed forces had not detected anything so far.
On criticism that the country was too soft in handling its problems with a neighbouring nation, Najib said Malaysia did not want to be involved in any conflict or war.
He also said the Royal Malaysian Navy was investigating the incident of a navy personnel who was found in southern Philippines recently after he fell off from a moving navy ship. -- BERNAMA -

This was a famous proverb during World War 2, when sensitive Code Words to be used on D-Day plans were co-incidentally used in a simple Cross-Word Game, and which caused serious alarm that the D-Day invasion plan has been compromised.
All this loose talk at the various topics on this SgForum Site, can only alert the Malaysian Authorities.
They will be wondering how can young Singaporeans have any idea of such contingency plans of using Johor as a Battleground, if not for the fact that such exercises must have been executed as part of the overall grand plan of a Forward Defence Strategy.
There have even been shocking postings of some NS Men volunteering information of what had occurred – seen, heard, and executed - during the National Service days!!!
Tone down the rhetoric, and follow our Ministers behaviors of not over-reacting, but to allow events to work it out quietly. -

"forward defence" and the threat of war over water has been words articulated for some years... not to mention that "forward defence" isn't exactly SAF's doctrine now... several scenarios are often talked about and some of them do not entail Sg making a pre-emptive strike because of the need not to be perceived as the aggressor.
again, its not exactly a top secret piece of info... take Tim Huxley's book (Defending the Lion City) for instance... most of us has read it and it shows that for a hardworking researcher, that there's lots of good info available in the public domain... stuff we're not meant to know about, nobody talks about so no worries and even if u did, u can't prove it anyway cos NOTHING is made public yet so no one takes u seriously anyway... -
OUr strategies is already very obvious to the world. overseas training in that damned vast dry terrain in Australia(Wallaby), Thailand, Taiwan, Red Flag, Cobra Gold(dun noe correct name anot
). It tells alot. Instead of diging trenches and setting up defensive positions with sandbags, we are running here and there! Look at the size of shoalwater bay

I read yesterday's newspaper, saying that both sides had been intruding into each other's airspace quite often recently. Haha. Something is boiling up man... i'm sure recently,everybody heard alot more blast of jets at night rite? I think the the RSAF and RMAF had been playing with each other at the disputed island. Try to get there by boat, see if they allow u there. Its very hot over there right now!!!!

Red Flag is very famous, being one of the most realistic, if not the most realistic, air force exercises in the world, it is conducted in the US.. .
Cobra Gold is an exercise with mainly US and Thailand participants, but Singapore also sents a small contingent to take part everytime. . and many countries send observers to this exercise, even the People's Republic of China. . .
note that I am still n secondary school, have never been through military training whatsoever and are able to obtain such information very very freely, btw, Pioneer reports on each of the three exercises mentioned above each time they happen too, so dun worry.

There is nothing to be said about the article. Should there be a need to employ such a strategy, the SAF also won't expect the MAF to just sit there and watch. If the MAF believes it can deliver a bloody nose, then let it try when something like that happens. Even if Mahathir didn't say this, it won't make a difference. Nothing new about this character.
I hope that SG and M'sia won't have to go to war. War profits nobody, not us, not them. War is not about who is right, and what is right... it is what is left that matters.
In anycase, I think its cheaper for us to build desalination plants and produce newater than it is to go to war. -

The upsetting thing about this Pedra Branca fisaco is that such unreasonable contradictory behaviour from Malaysia has happened before and will happen again. Again, they resist going to the ICJ, like in the water issue. They always set the image to their own consumers that they were the ones that would drag Singapore to the ICJ. However, everytime Singapore calls their bluff and says "Alright, let's go to the ICJ", Malaysia would just pretend to forget that they wanted to go to the ICJ in the first place.

Malaysia will not be provoked by a foreign author's contention that the country could fall into the hands of Singapore in a matter of hours if the two countries go to war, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said today.
He said the statement came at a dangerous time and noted that the foreigner has no grounds to challenge the capability of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the determination of its people in defending the homeland.
"We do not like to be challenged like this. He should not test Malaysia and our capability," he said.
Syed Hamid said the sovereignty of Malaysia was something not to be taken for granted and consider the statement as serious.
He said this to reporters after hosting the Aidilfitri Open House at his residence in Kota Tinggi today.
"It is an act of provocation that someone from outside the region should try to make their own conclusion. The book has ill intention towards Malaysia and we were seen as not capable of defending ourselves from outside threat," added Syed Hamid.
Tim Huxley, a director with the Centre of South East Asian Studies at the University of Hull, England wrote in his book "Defending the Lion City, The Armed Forces Of Singapore" comparing the disparity in the military balance between Malaysia and Singapore.
He wrote that since the 80s, the military balance moved decisively in favour of Singapore, making an offence strategy-the so-called pre-emptive strike-a realistic option for the island republic.
However, observers said Huxley's views were out of date and one sided.
"He is trying to belittle Malaysia and the statement made could cause Malaysia and Singapore into a conflict or even war," Syed Hamid said.
He said Huxley tried to describe Malaysia as a place of conflict and tried to harm the stability in the region.

Why should we react to the Malaysian Prime Minister and his Foreign Minister's “wild and empty accusation” that “some countries are planning to make Malaysia a battleground with pre-emptive strikes”?
The Malaysian Prime Minister must have been referring to the Australian Prime Minister Howard’s statement of “Pre-emptive Strikes” into any South-east Asian country - that cannot or unwilling to rid the terrorists who are planning further attacks at Australia from the safe haven of any South-east Asian countries.
None of our Singapore Ministers have ever stated “pre-emptive strikes” or making Malaysia a battleground that allow us to defend Singapore in depth - although many SgForum Contributors have said so, in so many different ways..
The author of the book – “Defending the Lion City” is another Australian and like his Australian Prime Minister, it seems that they share a common trait of pre-emptive interests on matters of Defense Strategies.
It will be better for us to watch the Malaysian Political Leaders shoot more frequently from their mouths, as the loud echo will confirm the hollowness of their mouths.

i disagree with your perspective on the malaysian outburst. it was NOT directed solely at Australia... u don't even have to read between the lines to find out...
as i mentioned before, "forward defence" has been articulated in official circles and in the press in the past to mean Sg's policy of deterrence and bringing the battle to the enemy's territory because of Sg's lack of a defensive depth.
"forward defence" is quoted exactly in the recent malaysian outburst. so don't be simplistic. it is exactly what it seems... a poorly veiled threat.
and Tim Huxley is an australian academic not an australian politician... assuming that he speaks for his gov't is ridiculous. not even all australian politicians echo their gov'ts position -
