I have one classmate from China who was suddenly offered a PR-ship by ICA last year for no reason. Attracting foreign talent, maybe?
And the ICA has encouraged him to take up Singapore Citizenship 3 years later, which is two years from now.
My classmate has lived in Singapore for a few years already and he speaks just like all of us. He also gets A1 or A2 for his English as well.
He told me that he likes Singapore very much, too. However, he somehow feels that Singaporeans generally would not welcome him to become a Singapore Citizen and he feels puzzled whether to take up Singapore Citizenship or not.
Singapore and China Citizenship. Which one should he choose?
His choice. If I were him, I stay a PR.
I don't see any advantage in becoming a Singaporean. If possible, I rather give up my citizenship and become a PR also.

I was given a choice to become a local citizen when I was about to finish my full time NS. At the end of the day, I decided to keep my original citizenship.
Stay a PR. Better for him that way.
if i were him, i will opt for the PR.
if i were u, i will not encourage him to.
if i am me, i will ask him to leave.

Your friend want to sign on to SAF? If not, who care about being in key position. More responsibilities, more jobs, and same pay.

Dunno about it. But he seems to regard Singapore as his home also. lol
Being a PR, your friend can enjoy whatever benefits as a citizenship of his homeland PLUS most of the benefits Singaporean are enjoying (maybe more). Best of both world!
some govt good stuffs apply to singapore citizenship nia, PR won't tio..
BUT
some govt bad stuffs apply to singapore citizenship nia, PR won't tio..

Maybe you can tell me what benefits of becoming a Singaporean? Seriously, I can't think of any except you may get to vote (not if your GRC is a walkover though).
Ya, you get to have some goodies (progress packages, etc) once in a while (before election or GST increase). Gov giving us money which they taking back the next moment.
Not all china chinese know Singapore and the ruling party well. So I see it necessary to let foreigners know about Singapore and her currently ruling party. Recently, I spoke to a china foreign worker and was told she is applying for PR and thereafter she wants to become citizen. I asked him about how well she know Singapore and the ruling party on the way they run Singapore, she does not know much.
I told her about it and thereafter she decided that she will only want to stay here make money and return to China as she does not agree with the way the ruling party is "taking care" of the people.

i think nowadays the govt is taking away more and more privileges from PRs to 'force' them to become Singapore Citizens. so in the end only we citizens enjoy the privileges and PRs will have very little to enjoy, maybe.
i think we Singaporeans are more respected worldwide than ppl from other countries.

Correct but if ur fren been offered citizenship, this is becasue of the brain drain faciing this country with 1000 locals migrating to other countries each year n giving up
their citizenship.

Not really. The gov is reducing some subsidizes (not much anyway) to the PR but if your friend is doing well, he don't even need them. The policy will still be favorable to the foreigners as the gov need them to build up the economy.
I thought Singaporeans are labelled as kiasu rather than "respected"...

There is a few scholars from China in my school and according to them, Singaporeans are generally well-respected in China. But some Chinese youths aged 20+ yrs old are not very happy with LKY and I dunno why...
If you are a guy, it gives you the privilege of serving NS.
If you are a girl, you can get Baby bonus for having kids.
Who says taking up sg citizenship is bad? ![]()

Why the China people want to come to Singapore ?
I really no understand.
If China losen up travelling restrictions.. will the China people still be so deperate to get out of the country ?
if you are PR, you will be enlisted.
If you are enlisted, might as well convert to citizen.

I find your case unusual as Malaysians do sign on in the SAF to be a Singaporean. Are you from Penang?

Respect is not given but earned. You do not need to have Singapore citizenship to get respect. Respect is also not given to a piece of paper that gives you a certain citizenship. Its just that Singapore citizenship just happen to open more doors to other countries but I think the western countries will get the message that Singapore citizenship is losing it previous value as it is given rather freely to anyone who wants to be a citizen.
