  SG is  4th and 5 th in foreign exchange volume,

  but manufacturing is 24% in GDP.Taxations in a year fr this

  not--so --cool sector  can build  3 hospitals of total 1500 beds.

  SG chips(semi--conductors) making volume is no.2 by city

  and no.6 by country in the world.

  They say if u want to be a Global Finance Center or hub or whatever,

  u have reduce your relevance in manufacturing,ie lower % in manufacturing

  in GDP.

  I think SG gavaman will give u a middle figure if u give him this advice.

  Starting few years ago,Singapore is striving to double manufacturing output

  to S$300 billion by 2018.

  Who's the global big-dog municipality when it comes to 300mm capacity? Taiwan's Hsinchu tops the list, but in second place with a bullet is Singapore, which has brought on at least one new fab online every year since 1995, and could sport more than $10 billion worth of new fabs coming online from 2007-2010, according to statistics from Strategic Marketing Associates.

  300mm residents in Singapore include Chartered, UMC, Micron (and its IM Flash JV with Intel), Systems on Silicon, and STMicroelectronics -- which has more wafer capacity there than in Europe, noted SMA'S George Burns. Singapore's ranking is particularly impressive given competition with other regions that offer large financial incentives to build (e.g. Dresden, and New York), and those that boast existing chip infrastructure and established players (e.g. South Korea).

  Some company makes their own chips(i call them in--house chips).

  But most of them outsourced

  for others ,called wafers,like Chartered Semi--conductor Manufacturing to make.

  This cost at least 1 to 3 US billion just to build a chip factory.

  Besides,the jobs are very specialised.

  What is the opportunity cost of keeping manufacturing

  To put the questions in other way.Is there any better use for the land,

  man power etc for factories?

  Shall we follow HK,tearing down factories to build residential

  to earn quick$?

  Taxation from this sector is 1.7 billion,5 % of gavaman total operational expenditure

  of 31.3 b.

  In bad or good time,every dollar counts.

  Any better ideas to use the existing sources of factories?

  Stupid guys just forget factory,Singapore factory,still

  can make good $$

  One thing i am scared of SG gavaman is--

  once they set the targets,hardly will miss it.

  Remember they say few years back that Bio medical will reach

  so much billions by 20xx,when SG then zero productions.

  GSK in Spore profits is some S$ 6 billions !!

  So what if these company makes lots of money, no.1 in this and that, but citizens suffering, money from the top don't trickle down to the middle income and poor.

   

  Singapore is the only country, despite it's high GDP per Capita, but low income for workers, compare with citizens in Japan (government always like to use them to compare out taxi fares), what is the hourly pay of a fast food restaurant staff, compare with citizens in Australia, what is the hourly pay of a waiter.

  Yeah, but where do you think the semi cond companies come from? And what semi-cond companies do you know are operating here?

  I can tell you that the MNCs come to Singapore mainly because of the geographical location.

  If you don't work in or know much about the semi cond industry in Singapore, don't continue to bullshit around.
