Almost 1 million Australians now live overseas and those abandoning their homeland are some of the brightest stars born under the Southern Cross.
According to figures from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, the number of Australians moving overseas on a permanent or long-term basis has grown steadily from 74,000 a year in 1993 to almost 120,000 last year, many of them heading to the commercial hot spots of London, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Frankfurt.
No one would care if 1 million of Australia's C team abandoned their boring jobs for a new life in Coventry or Kentucky but when almost 70 per cent of those leaving are professionals, managers and administrators, then governments take notice.

Reasons for leaving: -
Better, more flexible employment opportunities outside Australia
Receiving an overseas job offer or transfer within a multinational company
Education and study
Travel and a desire to gain international life experience
Professional development
Escaping the high income taxation level in Australia
Availability of higher income overseas.
If the brightest stars are leaving australia so can I say that those moving into australia, (excluding those for retirement) are usually those not so bright ones?

The latest statement on the 1000 local migrated to other countries giving up their
citizenship for country like Australia n SE Asian. SE Asian countries normally living
condition is not that good like in this country.
Something seem to be really wrong when local gave up their local citizenship for
SE Asian nationalities.

Some Aussies, after having benefited from the country's govt subsidies and other freebies contributed by tax payers, they don't want to pay it forward.
It's a shame to the rest of the patriotic Aussies.

Actually it means that those who regard Australia as a greener pasture must really come from a dried out pasture for Australia to be attractive and viable for them.

this article dont reflect the whole truth about why australians are moving oversea.
most of them are being provided with a expatriates package to live overseas. that only show they are working oversea and not really migrating. most still coming back to australia.
i cant imagine ppl migrating to HK except moving to HK just for work.
australia tax is not as high as some country in europe.
if they work in UK, i bet their company offer some tax incentives which make sense for them for leave or more money.
i bet there are few millions of americans working overseas does that mean american are not a great country to work in?
i also bet there are less laotians moving oversea. does tat mean laos is a better place to live in?

i agree completely. there is little basis for jumping on a conclusion based on what is reported. as the article stated, the reason for working overseas are multi-fold, but does it imply that none or the mojority are not returning?

Yeah, right. I come across a number of aussie expats here. They return to downunder for home leave or when their contract expire. None of them I know of give up on Australia and settle down here. Same goes to friends and relatives who have migrated to Australia, they will not come back to settle down in Singapore.

Thats why they say these are the brightest stars isnt it? when they are young and able, they work overseas gain experience, and pay taxes and contribute to overseas economy. And when they are done with working, they come back to Australia with all their millions to enjoy the benefits and subsidies paid by hardworking aussie and Asian immigrants including Singaporeans.

The Singaporeans who truely migrated to Australia and any other countries are those who took out their CPF money and gave up singapore citizenship. If they are keeping their CPF money here, or some who keep their singapore passport and just get australian PR... "they will not come back to Singapore", don't speak too soon.

Are you sure the MOST australian living overseas are living on expat package? or are you making your own assumption based on 1 or 2 Australian expats you know who are living in Singapore?
