SKM chief says Singapore will need many years to improve social graces
Channel NewsAsia - Friday, August 22
SINGAPORE: Singaporeans have been urged to improve their social graces as the country prepares to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2010.
But the new man in charge of making Singapore a more gracious society said that a sea—change in attitudes and social habits will take several generations at least.
For example, an initiative launched in 2002, encouraged commuters to stand on the left side of escalators at train stations, leaving the right lane free for those in a rush. However, this habit is hardly practised.
And in busy foodcourts, customers walk away after eating, leaving their food trays behind. This often happens even after an initiative to get customers to clear up after themselves was recently launched.
The Singapore Kindness Movement hopes to get the message across better by targeting the home, workplace and schools. One way to do it is to regularly highlight the efforts of gracious Singaporeans.
Koh Poh Tiong, Chairman, Singapore Kindness Movement, said: "I don’t think we should expect a transformational change in the next few years. As I said, it may take a generation, or two generations or three generations.
"But I believe as long as we can improve, in our behaviours and our courtesy, bit by bit each day, I think that’s good enough."
The Singapore Kindness Movement started over a decade ago, but currently only 40 individuals have pledged their support to the cause. Its chairman wants to increase that number, to one million pledges. — CNA/vm

The last IMF meeting in Singapore, Lee hsien loong launched the smiles movement/campaign to get Singaporeans to smile. Now, they want Singaporeans to improve social graces for the Youth Olympics 2010.
Who is this KOh Poh Tiong? Point fingers at the common people leaving out the leaders who run this country. The leaders, too, need to set good examples. It is so "gracious" for lee hsien loong to say to fix the oppositions. He is demonstrating he is so "gracious". The LKY and LHL are "gracious" to make the oppositions bankrupt. If the leaders can't be gracious, don't expect much from the common folks.
How much is he paying Singaporeans to be gracious?
Hey, there is no free lunch in Singapore. ![]()
Improve what fucking social graces?
Is Lee Kuan Yew going to improve his graces towards opposition and dissent in Singapore?
Or still want to sue?
Lee Kuan Yew also cannot change his fucking graces, want to tell us to change fucking graces.
Tell him to fuck off.

I suppose LKY, arrogant LHl and Pay and pay consider themselves perfect where social graces are concerned.
It is definitely not gracious to force the people to buy annuity. It is not gracious to call people losers, quitters, sound more like gangster than a minister. It is not gracious to ever ready point fingers at people when things go wrong. It is not gracious for LKY to blame people for not being grateful. Look at yourselves Pay and Pay before you expect any better from the people. Tyrants they are.
what is Poh Tiong's phone number? i will call him to give him a piece of my mind.

Check directory. They love talk about petty issues like returning tray which is not an issue at all. Seriously want to get things done, get him to correct the attitudes of the pay and pay.
... Graces, as rightly put by Poh Ah Pak; the ruling party should start with themselves first...
.. about people in food courts leaving their trays and dishes on the table after eating; if they clear it, what is there left for old folks who were once formerly white collard workers who has to eke out a living clearing tables in food courts and kopitiams? Perhaps if you say clear your trays in fast foods restaurants like BK, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, or KFC, I can understand that logic...
... afterall, 4 decades have passed under the governments Non Welfare policies, people are naturally moulded to be self-centered, and self-preserving... because there will be no free lunches or any REAL helping hand when one falls...
... therefore, it will still be every man for himself in so long as there is no change in governance...
.. I say; Like Government, Like Citizens...
Being gracious means we can be exempt from paying GST and ERP? ![]()

I think the reason govt want us to learn to b gracious is because of the coming youth olympic n the courteosuy movement has been going on for the past ten years.
It has not yieleded any significant result. I remember bumped into a PRC lecturer n he mentioned govt is right to implement NS to teach us defence skill n most important manner such as greeting the sergeant n officer whether we like them or hate them.

Hmm.. Does anyone agree that the root problem is that because we're all getting too boh chap with things happening around us?
If have a social graces exam, i'm sure we'll all do well. exam is the only thing s'pore students reconise.

Social graces have to start from young.
At Primary 1 - 6 , the children have to pass an exam on basic etiquette and courtesy
At Secondary school level, they have to pass another exam on intermediate etiquette and courtesy. Practical exams will be held and assessed by peers .
At JC and poly level , an advanced level practical exam on etiquette and courtesy will be set. Those who cannot pass above grade B will not be allowed into University.
Please stay tune for more modules coming in from the agency which brought you the pak tor modules and creativity modules. Our motto: there is nothing you cannot memorise until you get an A.
First they must target the LKY family. Or disposed of them completely.
Evil breeds evil.
The act of returning the dishes back after finishing food at food court - the food court was never designed for people to return their cuttery after finish. This act cannot be the eason for judging sg people.
The act of tissue booking seat - I read the article written in the 154th as defining this act as uncouth. The person who wrote this have not go for lunch at CBD. That is why he will never know it is very hard to find any seat during lunch. I am puzzled on how this act can be classified as uncouth.
Dun the Youth Olympic Committee have better things to focus on as in getting the basic facilities ready, instead of trying to waste their time in trying to change this petty habits.
It is disappointing that we are wasting resources in putting a better wayang (surface job) than to solving real inflation and life issues as mentioned in the national rally.

For me it seems like that. Cause i've been in other country forum before.
Besides, I don't see any point of changing our social habits. Our country is made like this, thats why our habits are formed to fit into the different environment we are born in. Just like in any other country. Its not fair to say that our habits are not good. We simply have to change to fit into out surroundings.

Agree with you. the koh poh tiong and lhl making nothing out of something. There are other more important issues to concentrate and take care of.
