"Two Straits Time forum letters raise the non-monetary aspects of the issue. For example, in the letter entitled “Tackle the problem, not the symptoms” published on 20 Aug, Mr Thomas Ling wondered aloud if the Government was “barking up the wrong tree regarding the issue of our falling population”.
He said: “Our pursuit of economic excellence and rewards in the past 40 years has resulted in a new breed of young Singaporeans who hold different values about life”.
I agree with him. Nowadays, Singaporeans are more individualistic and materialistic, no thanks in part to the rapidly increasing cost of living, over-crowding, the decrease in personal space, and the fast paced of life. And this is a global phenomenon, prevalent in the developed world. Look at Japan, for instance.
Thomas Ling said: “While much of the blame has been pinned on our ‘Stop At Two’ policy in the 70s, the truth has to do with changing lifestyles rather than the success of that policy.”
My take is that the ‘Stop At Two’ policy was shortsighted. It was not just a successful policy, but one that overshot its intended target. As a result, the decline in Singapore’s birth rate has been artificially accelerated over the years, and now the Government imports vast numbers of foreign talents in an attempt to make up the numbers."

Just like the "Stop at 2" policy overshot its intended target, this "increase population at all cost" policy will backfire too in the future.
When the population hits 6 million in 10, 20 years time and there is a strain on resources, you want to start kicking people out of the country? ![]()
Dun be surprised if our population next time in 2050 8 million u know? going by the way govt is using population imports to sustain the economy growth.
How to retire when that time so crowded lol.

By that time, there will be 2 million elderly citizens collecting tin cans for a living.
Singapore will be known as the city of tin can collectors. ![]()

knn... i last night try to reply to u. but the thread kena deleted...
gf only... not yet engaged, married, newlyweds.
just married = newlyweds. two person world for 1st 2/3 years.
best is have by age 32. cos u dun want when u r 50 due to semi-retirement age, ur child r still in primary school. cos not tertiary educated, no decent income.
and if SG education not good for u, send them overseas lah... easy since combine incomed is 10k and more.
kindergarden queue is due to sending toddlers to famous private preschools like what eton playhouse. monthly fee is 800 and above. waiting list is longer.
if those PCF kindergarden, wait list is shorter mah...
and some parents even moved house to go into famous school within 1 or 2km of residental home.

where got enough tin cans to share? we need more drinking tin cans competition haha...
coca cola, f&n, pokka confirm make big bucks!
Skip the kindergarten if you got time home teach better. But most couples always no time, got time for work only haha...
sorry haven't enter parenthood yet, but what is the main factor putting them off babies?
is it money? maybe i'm ignorant, but i dun see why 10k per month is not enough to start a family? other than neccessities like HDB, cars/transport etc, maybe it's time to cut down on luxury goods? i mean which parent never sacrifice for their children?
or is it because of competition from FTs???

TS is one of the DINKs... double income no kids community
want 2 person world forever, splurge money for themselves only.. e.g. condominum, expensive furniture...enjoying life pampering themselves...
TS give education in SG as his major reason. solution: have kids but send them aboard to study... so simple solution... overseas have many boarding schools. whats the big deal abt the education stress factor.
Now that u've mentioned it, yeh overseas education is possible. But then again, why have kids when u send them away at young age?
Haha.
And then what if kids grow up and be rascals in their teens?
I'm sure many of u have frens who are married but no children. Moreover, there are many of us late 20s pple or even early 30s who are not married.

they plan for children in their marriage, but later, 2 person world for the 1st few years / some r still trying for a child.
