Anyway I only dispute your claim about the price of USD 0.72 per trip.
Don't sidetrack.

was happy with my SPH price... :D
Wait wait, no hurry.

MRT ride in KL minimum rate is S$ fifty cents. YOu don't get to travel with this low rate in sg.

That's to let you know not all rides start with HKD 23.50, there are afew rides out of the thousand possible combination of rides that cost above HKD 20. But basing your averages on afew extremal events skews your analysis to extremes. ![]()
I know who the public bus service operators are, I was too lazy to source for the information, rather just link you something convenient to show you not all bus rides end up HKD 23.50. ![]()
There are actually 5 bus companies in Hong Kong.
Look at the average cost per car kilometers for both MTR (Hong Kong) and SMRT.
SMRT average cost per car kilometers travelled has increased 6.40% since 2004, whereas MTR (HK) has decreased it by 4.0% since 2003.
SMRT being a government held monopoly failed to provide an efficient cost control measure. Afterall it behaves like a monopoly, if profits drop just increase the commuter fares to increase earnings again.
Were there any price increases in MTR (HK) fare structure (within 1 year) since fuel cost has increased?

**The cost of operating SMRT includes other minor cost, which might affect the total cost, but it is impossible to find cost solely related to rail service only. It is assumed that if the cost were applied cosistently throughout, it will reveal the cost per car kilometer travelled thoughout the years.
Also consider the return on equity (ROE) for both these mass transit companies.
Hong Kong 2007 has a ROE of 18.1%, while SMRT 2008 has a ROE of 22.8%, a difference of 4.7%.

Time to think again!
Are we being overcharged for our necessities by government controlled monopolies?

There might be an error in the original author's comparison.
2 Stops
MRT (SG): SGD 0.90
MTR (HK): SGD 0.728 (HKD 4)
4 stops
MRT (SG): SGD 1.10
MTR (HK): SGD 0.91 (HKD 5)
5 stops
MRT (SG): SGD 1.30
MTR (HK): SGD 0.91 (HKD 5)
9 stops
MRT (SG): SGD 1.30
MTR (HK): SGD 1.365 (HKD 7.5)
These are published rates without the discounts, it would be unfair to factor in the discounts because MTR has it's own system of discounts. For short distances MTR (HK) is cheaper, whereas MRT (SG) is cheaper for longer distances (provided no LRT is used).
ohh yesh I forgot
In Hong Kong if you take KMB or NWFB (Incl CityBus) buses, you pay for e full fare regardless of boarding and alighting point
One example is Western Harbour Crossing Express 968 tat runs from Yuen Long in NT to Causeway Bay in HK Island. Full fare is HK$21.40...
Even if you board it at West Kowloon to crossover to Hong Kong Island, e fare is HK$21.40 as well, same as boarding it from Yuen Long ![]()
same as if you board from Yuen Long heading to West Kowloon, you still gotta pay HK$21.40 even if you are not alighting at Hong Kong Island ![]()
