(maybe if it were to town that might be different)... still, you cannot generalize and say that going public is always better.
public transport in OZ costs a freaking $2.70 FOR a 2 hour ticket in suburban areas. and u can only use it on bus, trams and trains for 2 hours and it expires.
which means for people commuting to work from the morning and returning in the evening, it costs $6.50.
and most people travel to city to work and that is $3.30 for a 2 hour ticket
A$3.30/2hr to A$3.50 at the beginning of 2008, and even more for daily/weekly/monthly tickets. (You don't get charged per trip like in Singapore, so even if you're just making a one-way journey, you've got no alternative than to fork out more than three bucks). Did my salary go up? No, my taxes did, thanks to Kevin Rudd. And interest rates have gone up. The fare rise is a bigger increase than S$.03 that everyone gets up in arms about. And what do we get for it? Trains still get cancelled. Trams still change their service at the last minute.
and once i was stuck in a not so safe area after 10. The last tram was supposed to arrive at 10.20 according to the bloody timetable - it didnt and in oz there is this number to call on your mobile to find out the next tram arrival, to my horror it stated the next tram is in the morning. Wtf ??!!

Sillyporeans, please
Suck it up
In Oz its the same. Ruling elite
Only fools will go to the resort. i can just travel to Natural adelaide and Tasmania to stay with my friends than paying thru my nose for a artificial man made singapore resort

ad in your food expenses ( i meal = avg $7.50), its more than $13 per day spent and u still get taxed.
In singapore i just need around $10 for food ( 2 meals) and transport per day - $50 per week and thats $200 per month.

fucking hell, how much tax u paying?
I feel the amount of tax u paying , u r not getting the amenities for that price.
and also u working there?
I have worked for 3 long yrears and i can tell u the work culture is horrible in melbourne. With the dozens of PRC and Indian, expect lot of politics..
The amount of tax you're paying doesn't even start to giving you the amenities.
When you're old, the government doesn't give a sh!t about you (think euthanasia). You'll have to work until you're over 60 before getting what reserves you have in your CPF (which, may I remind you, is forcibly imposed). While citizens in America get to enjoy retirement at around 50 and can ask the government for money and healthcare subsidies, you'll be picking up cardboards off the streets.
Talking about culture, Singapore's culture is nowhere near as diverse as some other countries. You can boast all you want, but how often do you see Singaporeans celebrate Chinese New Year like in China/Hong Kong?
Land-wise, have us a better city structure than Tokyo/Hong Kong? Do we have clean waters like those in Huntington Beach or Perth? Have we nature reserves that can rival those in China?

somehow i have the feeling you just avoided my question. giving rough figures is more prudent than giving the exact amount anyway.
i gave u exact figures..or at least a minor difference..
Tell me why does our country have such a high migration rate, the government is getting worried?
Do you think the Singapore brains have not weighed each factor before deriving at the decision to migrate? Have you not thought that they must've found another country better suited to migrate?
You may say all the bad things in the world, but statistics never lie.

depends on where...melbourne is one of the worst places to work..

so, it then justifies your rant that the whole of australia is bad becos you got a raw deal there?
like most countries, australia is large. in small town, the pay is lower, the cost of living is lower too. the public transport facilities are bad there.
in big cities, the pay is higher, the cost of living is higher too. some people with lower wages will have trouble owning a car in the big city due to the cost of living, as a car will include parking and taxes.
if you want to compare to singapore, it is prudent to compare to the big city, and only include the average salary of people in the big cities. that will be a better comparison.

hello, may i know what tax u are paying for in singapore?
most complaint i hear is
COE, ERP - then dun buy a car if u cant afford it
Tv Licence - , write in to them and say u dont have a tv. U dont need crap local programming. I did not own one when i was in singapore, as i mostly rent movies from DVD to watch on computer
Town council tax - This understandable as they upgade and beautify your area
In singapore i just need around $10 for food and transport per day - $50 per week and thats $200 per month.
And how long ago was that????????
One can easily spend near to $5 on public transport nowadays.

So now pple complain
Electricity bill rose 21% ==> Don't use electricity?
Public transport fees rise ==> Walk all the way from east to west?
I miss the food more than my friends and relatives in Singapore. If suddenly I should be banned from visiting Singapore/Malaysia,I wont cry but if you ban me for life from visiting Thailand or Indonesia....I die!
Split Second.. I'm interested to know if you are a student or working adult?
Originally posted by SPLIT SECOND:those who liked overseas, majority i know moved with their families, do u know that? And they dont feel the pain.
Likewise also many students who went from singapore to overseas to study have returned because of one thing - family...
when u state people who liked and people who disliked, please also state the demographics rather than generalising as one single group.
the single individuals who went overseas alone are most likely to return. But again i know some families have also returned.
Likewise also many students who went from singapore to overseas to study have returned because of one thing - family...
If this is true, the government wouldn't have complained
1) Many students chose to stay abroad after their studies
2) Many PSC Scholarship students broke their bonds to work overseas.

near to but not for everyone...
in Oz its rather pretty fixed..confirms $6.50 per day..
Originally posted by SPLIT SECOND:near to but not for everyone...

Ya, more for pple who have more trips.
For me, just taking a train to work, and back home immediately, cost about $3 a day. This is without changing of bus or train network. This is only for a 15 mins train ride because I stay near my workplace. This is excluding going out to shop or work, or travelling elsewhere before going home.
And you have to take into account price of transport vs average salary ratio. You don't compare things just like that. E.g. a $1 bread means less to someone earning $10000 a month as compared to someone earning $1000 a month.
And you have to consider the distance travelled. How big is Singapore, really...
