She said stories of patients banked up in corridors of emergency departments and even on chairs and floors were too common and were simply due to a lack of beds.

- Kids running amok in town - acting mayor
- Says they need to smell fear
- And the riot squad would set them straight
"They need to smell fear,'' acting mayor Murray Stewart said.
Mr Stewart said the Darwin-based Territory Response Section should be stationed in Alice Springs for one month and be given the stop-and-search, arrest and detention powers like those invoked during a national disaster, The Northern Territory News reports..........
The other side may looks greener, but there are some hidden costs.
Hospitals in Victoria ---- bottlenecks delay surgery
MANAGEMENT failures are causing unnecessary delays and slowing the flow of patients through Victorian public hospitals, a report says.
Delays in getting patients to hospital beds are causing bottlenecks in the state's public hospitals and forcing postponements of elective surgery.
Victorian Auditor-General Des Pearson's report, tabled in state parliament today, found Victoria has the second highest public hospital admission rate in Australia, with 247 admissions per 1,000 people.

Foreigners making life hard for u as a foreigner is worst than a foreigner making life hard for u as a local.
They do bring about this "clique" mentality. If given a choice, i would like to work in Adelaide or Tasmania where the environment is more conducive.People are nice too
In fact in OZ, it is so diverse between different states that the environment varies. In capital cities like melbourne and sydney working class people, its more of a busy lifestyle and people are stressed , when they are, they tend to be rather unfriendly or keep to themselves.
So what difference it makes if i come to s'pore and work? Foreigners as well, and it could be even worst as there are no workplace ethics and laws in sg.
But on the other hand, U will have singaporeans as your khaki who may agree with yr opinions and ideas.
sorry mate. but u cannot count on anyone to agree with your opinions and ideas. i have worked in the SG local IT industry for the past 10+ years and each year, i saw the number of singaporeans dwindling over the years until i was the minority.
shits happen especially when some foreigners think they are far better than us in Oz, heck, some singaporeans there thought of the same too about other fellow singaporeans in Oz.
really, we cannot count on others for this matter. and u already have experienced the "privilege" of a worker-rights oriented environments as in Oz, can u adapt back to the old SG worker abusive ways?

i read today news many oz schools are not safe!
7:01pm FORMER world champion swim coach Laurie Lawrence says public swimming pools on the Gold Coast closed because of fears of electric shocks could be part of a bigger problem.
Unexplained electrical currents were discovered during routine testing of seven public Gold Coast pools.
Operators were forced to close the pools today after local government authorities told them the pools' electrical conductivity readings did not meet Australian safety standards.

POORLY maintained classrooms in Victoria's public schools pose a risk to student safety, a report has warned.
A lack of investment has been blamed for the unsafe classrooms with an Auditor-General's report saying most buildings fail to provide suitable learning environments.
Victorian Auditor-General Des Pearson said the majority of the state's school buildings were built between the 1950s and 1970s using "lesser quality materials''.

let me tell u once u u are down there, u will start to miss your frens, relatives and family, unless u have the resources to move them all over to yr new destination.
Well, it is quite true that u cannot be rich in s'pore easily, but s'pore provides more value for the bucks than what overseas can provide. Safety, lively clean surroundings, ease of life and an efficient transport system.
The most important aspect is the culture and food and festivals that u have grown up with.
Are u willing to let all these go for some secluded lonely life in a foreign destination?
How many of u agree with me?

Split Second,
I do agree with you that I missed Singapore lots. But I gradually grew out of missing Singapore a long time ago, when I first finished university overseas. It was the encouragement of my wife to work in the UK and I have since never looked back. I am earning alot more as an engineer in the UK than in Singapore. Both my wife and me are working in very good positions in established MNCs in the UK. I believe that one day I will return to Singapore but probably in a management role that must first match my salary in the UK. In the meantime, we tend to use Skype to speak with friends and family in Singapore regularly.
I am aiming towards getting my PR in the UK in the next 2 years. With that it will also mean that my children will not have to pay the ridiculous school fees for foreigners to study in prestigous universities in the UK. Also, my lifestyle in the UK is fairly simple, which has already helped me to save enough money for us to buy our 2nd home. With the way things are going, I should be able to buy a proper 4 bedroom house in Southwest in England and then rent out the properties if I choose to leave for Singapore.
So yes, there are plenty of sacrifices to make when you work overseas. But if you are able to endure the returns are definitely much better than working in Singapore. Unlike Singapore, Europe can provide excellent opportunities and remuneration packages for talented people who may find it tough in Singapore due to limited opportunities. Opportunities are normally dictated by the Singapore goverment with the GLCs and the direction that the goverment would like to invest in. For now, it's mainly research and finance in Singapore. I have met Singaporeans who are artists or designers in London and they are doing very well, more so than in Singapore so that is why we choose to stay here. We make do with the once a year visit to our family members and the time spent is always well cherished.
I hope this gives a better idea of how some Singaporean overseas feel about this issue.
Cheers

Internet filter to block 10,000-plus "unwanted" sites
November 13, 2008 10:44am
READERS of The Courier-Mail online have blasted plans for Australia's mandatory internet filter to block 10,000 websites.
The websites form a blacklist of unspecified "unwanted content", Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy revealed in Federal Parliament.
The 10,000 blacklisted websites would be blocked in addition to 1300 websites identified by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

May i give my humble advices that do your home work!!
can u believe a modern city like Sydney will go backwards on rails,
from modern double decks trains to single deck rattlering trains ?
Why?
No money lah.
Secret plan for return of red rattlers

"There is a long-term strategic direction to start investing in single-deck rolling stock," Mr Campbell said#. The plan would "assist in moving more people across the network faster by reducing dwell time [the time a train spends in each station], address capacity constraints and improve service levels on the RailCorp network."
While NSW plans to switch to single-deck trains, in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France suburban rail networks are being converted to double-deck trains.
#
the NSW Transport Minister, David Campbell
The CityRail network is to be converted to single-deck trains - which could cost $5 billion in signalling work and billions more for new trains - despite a $9.5 billion contract for 626 double-deck carriages that are yet to be delivered, writes Linton Besser. Could single-deck trains be the answer to Sydney's transport problems?
nnn
While they are at they could bring back steam trains....or better still employ people to walk in front of each train with a red flag......

The budget papers refer to single deck trains being able to operate at a "higher frequency".
Is there a genuine operational reason for this?
At first glance, it looks like codswallop to me - why would a single deck fleet be more efficient (apart from manufacturing costs, of course) than a doubel deck fleet?

Sg Ty,
I posted in this week few things about rich states like Vic and NSW.

Future Brisbane in-depth section.........In one Brisbane, the residents spend to live. They reside in the inner city where their apartment blocks have pools, entertainment balconies, gyms, spas and saunas and down the street is a choice of cafes.
In the other Brisbane, people are working longer, dealing with long commutes and are rarely home. They are living in houses that are dreary and built as an investment rather than as a nice place to live............
SG gavaman shall consider buy this package of land 13 times

Please! Somebody stop the madness! I feel like there has been a complete lack of public consultation on a matter like this. Someone needs to bite the bullet and invest the money to make our current systems work. While services may run slightly faster, they would need to be MUCH more frequent to make up for the lost capacity - which will be huge. I hope common sense prevails in this case, that money should be directly injected into upgrading our current systems - getting more 'working' millenium trains on our tracks, and improving services.
