Thank you Singtel for helping me make my decision not to renew my contract with them. Actually, I was still in a dilemma.
Will see increase in business for Starhub, M1 mobile subscription.
Originally posted by MohamedF:If acutally a simple concept... In western country handphones are called cellphones because they work in a cell/grid system... Meaning there is a cell tower every few Kilometers... Lets say you're in Boon Lay, you make or receive a call, you have to get through the tower at Boon Lay, then it transfer the call along the grid next to it until it reaches the caller... That's why cell range is actually limited to maybe around 5 kilometers only...
So... its actually easy to track you... they just track your signal from the nearest cell... but it is definately impossible to pint point your exact position... they can say you're in Boon Lay but they can't say which mama shop you're in...
yes, similarly when roaming overseas & mobile cell info is turned on...display will reveal which cell ur in.
i believe M1 customers can see where they are on their mobile even in s'pore. saw in on my friends SE phone.
basically anyone who owns a mobile & switched it on can actually be traced...

Public phones can be traced too. Singtel makes it easy to track people.

public phone cannot be traced as easily as a mobile phone. tracing of public phone happens only when receiver launches a police report requesting for it. if caller doesn;t stick to one public phone, chances of trcing whereabouts will be almost negligible.
mobile phone is different....many more things can be done on a mobile phone w/o the user even knowing.

No, I am not surprised. Knew it long ago that it is possible to track mobile users. What really is new here is Singtel is offering this service so conveniently.

i was wondering whether it has the same function like the caller non id which u can choose to allow & disallow by pressing some code...
Singtel must get consent from the mobile phone user to be tracked & he/she can refuse to give the consent - so in the end nobody is the wiser.
