Dangerous SOP of Mr Tan
Mr Tan is doing a good job by giving his expertise advices to the public.
But this Q and A seem make me to appeal to him to adopt a more
serious and more professional way to handle enquiry.
There are too many people trust him nowadays.
The answers show his professionalism.
But the way he do things is more important to show his
characters.
He answers a question regarding a travel insurance.
pl read below.
I think he can do much better by reading the terms and conditions
of the subject travel insurance before he answers the question.
His reply shows his good heart but not his professsionalism.
In Laws of Contract,there is not such things like
"quite reasonable and is connected ".
U have to read the contract then u know if the brother in law of the
writer is considered as family memeber.
Not every travel insurance policy is the same.
For example,INCOME covers brother in law:
9. TRIP CANCELLATION/CURTAILMENT EXPENSES INCLUDING HIJACKING
We will reimburse the non-refundable portion of all travel costs prepaid in advance including the travel
agent's cancellation fee should the journey for which this Insurance has been effected be cancelled or
curtailed because of any of the following reasons:
(a) Your death or death of your family members or travelling companion.
DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Policy, the following definitions apply:
We/Our/Us means NTUC Income Insurance Co-operative Limited.
You/Yours means the Insured Person(s) referred to in the Certificate.
Family members means your spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents and parents-in law.
http://www.income.com.sg/insurance/travel/coverage.asp
@@@@@@@@@@
can u see the differences?I have provided some basic proofs!!
Mr Tan has not!!
There is no guess work please.

REPLY
In my frank opinion, the insurance company should pay your claim, which is quite reasonable and is connected to a covered event. I am sad that they have rejected the claim, which is not fair to the policyholder.

At least i do some home work before i say.
Not all the policy is the same.
I suggest u list down what want included in the insurance and what u dunt want
be included before u looks for the right policy.
Otherwise u will get lost in the jungle of terms and conditions.
This is damn easy to say this or that shall be compensated,after somethings happen.
But the utmost question is:
Can u prove in court.
GE dunt mention death of family member in the simplified brochure.
So ,i am not sure,touch wood,in the event of the death of family
member,if the insured can make the claim.

The theme of The case Mr Tan mentioned is the definition of family
member.So,the first step is look at the definition,if any,in the policy.
Here is part of the letter to Tan:
'I received a letter from the insurance company stating that:
"a - taxi and shuttlefares as expenses incurred after the trip curtailment is not payable under the policy cover
b - trip curtailment expenses for me as the deceased is not considered as a family member under the policy definition."
I would appreciate you frank opinion on 'a' and 'b' before I pursue the matter further.
LNW'--end of quote
@@@@@@@@@
Any law undergrad may advice u look at the definition before u speak
further.Full Stop.
I think Mr Tan has not read the definition before he wrote this reply.
If this is the case,he is damn wrong.

In laws,there is no guess work.
Just go to read the contract to get the liability etc.
for example,AXA says very clearly that Brother/in law is included.
http://www.axa.com.sg/axa_ins_sg/doc/Policy_Wording/Travel-AXA-Insurance-Traveller.pdf
14. “Immediate Family Member" means spouse, child, son-in-law, daughter-in-law,
parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandparent-in-law, grandchild, brother,
sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law.
I am not advertising for any insurer.I just want to show not every policy is the same.U see this one cover if the home of the insurer get problems:
SECTION 16 – TRAVEL CURTAILMENT
We will pay for the
(a) unused travel fare and accommodation charges or deposits the Insured Person has paid or payments which the Insured Person is legally obliged to pay which are not recoverable from any other source, and
(b) reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses necessarily and unavoidably incurred overseas for a direct Trip Home,
if the Journey is unexpectedly and unavoidably curtailed or abandoned after its commencement requiring the Insured Person to return Home before the scheduled return date due to any of the following reasons:
1. death, Serious Injury or Serious Illness of the Insured Person or his/her spouse, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, child, child-in-law, grandchild, brother, sister or Travel Companion provided that a written confirmation of the nature of such serious Injury or Serious Illness is received from a Medical Practitioner;
2. hijacking of the aircraft in which the Insured Person is on board as a passenger;
3. the Insured Person or his/her Travel Companion being called as a witness in the Court of Law in Singapore;
4. the Insured Person’s Home being seriously damaged and becoming uninhabitable following burglary, fire, flood, typhoon, earthquake or landslip which requires the Insured Person’s presence in Singapore;
5. unexpected outbreaks of strike, industrial action, riot, civil commotion which prevent the Insured Person from continuing with the scheduled Journey;
6. natural disasters (such as typhoon, earthquake) which prevent the Insured Person from continuing with the scheduled Journey;
http://www.dbs.com/sg/personal/insurance/additionalinfo/policywording/Pages/ts_policy_wording.pdf
'requires the Insured Person’s presence in Singapore;'
This clause is very useful and reasonable.When your home is in serious trouble,
u must come back to handle it.
Have u find similiar clause in other travel insurance?
@@@@@@@@@
so next time if your fren can claim this or that and get paid,
pl look at his policy and your policy before u make a complaint.
@@@@@@@@@@
I suggest u list down what want included in the insurance and what u dunt want
be included before u sign and pay for the right policy.
Otherwise u will get lost in the jungle of terms and conditions.

i could not understand why some here ever said TOC is a distracter.
I wonder what does that mean or imply?
By the way, I always maintain neutral and keep an open mind and not trust too many too much.
If PAP is going to nominate a non-Chinese for presidency, there will not be any voting. It’s walk-in as usual.
