Escape Of JI Detainee Mas Selamat From Detention - Comments by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Wong Kan Seng in Parliament, 28 February 2008There has been a security lapse at the Whitley Road Detention Centre, which allowed Mas Selamat to escape. He was taken out of his cell to go to the family visitation room to wait for his family. He requested to go to the toilet and escaped. This should never have happened. I am sorry that it has.An independent investigation is underway. We should not speculate now. Security at the centre has been stepped up.Mas Selamat is a security threat which is why he was placed under preventive detention. However, there is no information that he has any plans that threaten public safety. Nevertheless, we are not taking any chances. Our security agencies assessed that he was of no imminent danger to the public. The focus then was to lockdown the immediate vicinity of the detention centre and start a systematic search. The priority is to find and arrest Mas Selamat. No efforts will be spared to track him down. Security at our land, sea and air checkpoints have been tightened, including areas where there may be a possibility that he may leave from places which are not the normal checkpoints. In the meantime, I urge the public to stay calm and to report any suspicious sightings to the Police immediately. Anyone who renders assistance to him is committing a grave offence.MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS28 February 2008
first paragraph ==> something bad happen, was the fault of the authorities, and an apology.
2nd paragrah ==> actions currently taken to address issue
3rd paragraph ==> describe threat
4th paragraph ==> describe plan to deal with threat
5th paragraph ==> general instructions to public on the threat.
maybe you were hoping for something like all apologies, alot of crying and an immediate resignation . if he do that, he is an ass, cause the immediate action is to solve the problem, not to cry and whine, and run away leaving the problem to the next guy...

You can tell that to your boss next time you screw up on anything.
Tell him don't fire you and you will also not resign.

dude, is WKS the boss? or is he the subodinate who screw up the thing?
As Minister in charge, one should take responsibility.
Minister quits over carnage
MUMBAI: India's interior minister resigned yesterday as anger grew over intelligence failures leading up to the devastating attacks on Mumbai and the government mulled suspending a peace process with Pakistan...

yah, did that minister quit when the airport is under attack? he quit after the thing ends. this should round up the immediate statement by WKS.
let's move on to whether WKS should quit. let's compare the mumbai airport terrorisim to the mas selamat escape. 195 dead. wow, suddenly the comparison is not very viable anymore.
let's come up with a closer example of ministers quitting their jobs to compare instead.

Originally posted by Poh Ah Pak:This apology is a bit vague in my opinion.
It could be interpreted as Wong Kan Seng giving his opinion on the incident.
He felt sorry that the incident occured.
It is a bit vague and unclear.
I think the apology should be stronger and more clear, for example:
During a heated prime minister's questions session, Mr Brown said: "I profoundly regret and apologise for the inconvenience and worries that have been caused to millions of families who receive child benefits.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and unhappiness caused to the tourists," Au King-chi, Hong Kong commissioner for tourism, told reporters.

He said: "I've apologised to Academi, I've also apologised to all the authors involved and I've written to them today again to apologise. A genuine mistake, a misunderstanding and as a minister I take full responsibility for that."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/poli
In a letter to shadow secretary of state for children, schools and families Michael Gove, David Bell wrote: "The individuals concerned have crossed the boundary of what would be expected of them under the Civil Service Code. For that, as permanent secretary of this department, I apologise."

Do you agree with my view Bentsb05, that the apology is a bit vague?
'I am sorry for what happened' (Is what Poh Ah Pak wanted to hear)
'I am sorry that it has happen' (What the nation got from WKS)

Mumbai -They got information in Febuary that the 5 stars hotels in Mubai were going to be targetted but they did nothing so someone's head had to roll
Thai Airport-Protesters can just suka suka at a drop of a hat forced a shut down at an International Airport and still nobody has the power to do something.Someone's head had to roll.
A high profiled terrorist just limped out of a top security and disappeared into thin air in a tiny island of 5 million people.WKS please place your head on the guillotine can ar not?

i find it hard to compare 195 deaths, the shutting down of an international airport to the escape of a lame terrorist.
i think you can compare that to maybe micheal scoffield and alot of others breaking out of prison and the warden had to resign. by contrast, the superintendent of the whitley detention had to resign.
apples compare to apples...

You are right.
We should compare apples with apples.
But let's take the MS episode by itself.
How can a lame crippled terrorist escape from a detention centre via a toilet window and remain hidden in a small country like Singapore for so many months? ![]()
ok so let us wait for the lame terrorist to shut down Changi Airport and kill a few hundred people and then demand that not only WKS resign but migrate to China as well.Just kidding cheers!!

All the reasons why the head shouldnt roll instead of punishing the tail.
Originally posted by Short Ninja:All the reasons why the head shouldnt roll instead of punishing the tail.
which head? the superintentent in charge of warden not head ah? or the overall in charge of ISA? WKS? the PM? the President?
how serious the problem means how far the buck goes. if there is a terrorist attack in singapore despite intel being sourced, or rioting at changi airport, than kill and hang WKS.
if some guy managed to escape prison, we kill WKS, DPM, than what should we do if there is a terrorist attack? kill the PM and the whole cabinet also not enough.
