Amidst the war-mongering and bullying of the malaysians and the economic recession in Singapore, what is Singapore worth defending?
HDB flat ?
Personal car ?
LRT ? Bt Panjang ?
Airport ?
Port ?
Court ? Parliament ?
Highway ?
Shopping centre ?
My family ?
Our way of life ?
Our system of government ?
Our dignity ?
No alternate route of subsistence ?
If my parents are no longer here and many of my friends have moved away for work or overseas living, what is there left for me to defend ? My HDB flat ? My car ? I am globally mobile. It just occured to me to ask this question after hearing the speech on Pedra Branca. Yes, sovereignity is important. Yes, space and depth are important. Yes, we should not be intimidated by those who are less effective than us. But whatelse is there to portend for me so vital that my life is worth sacrificing. And will the war planners and the scholar-generals be with me at the front-line ? Are there heroes out there that I can follow their path to keep my nation free. Can I trust them ? Can anyone give me a good reasoning or considered opinion or convincing argument ? I guess Singapore as much as each of us are at a crossroad and at soul-searching.

If I fight, it will be so that man beside me can have a better chance of going home safely to his family.
Though we do not like to fight wars, sometimes they are necessary esp. when you cannot convince certain people that they are not the master race of this area, we have to forcibly free them from that idea. It's not a matter of backbone or not, we all get scared but a matter of keeping each other safe, and fighting for what you believe is right.
In that sense, prehaps those terrorists are thinking the same way, but too bad they are on the other side of our barrels... -

Why should i permit or even silently accept another to usurp what is rightfully mine without a voice of protest if not through force of arms?
the material part of my life is just as important as my none material or higher part of my life, be that my family, friends, countrymen, fellow church believers or my comrade in arms...
without the material part of my LIFE... do you expect me to house my family in a cave? or walk around in rag tag clothing? watch my family starve and friends dying on the field with acceptance?
wat kind of man or life is that?
Globally mobile.... so wat? your lifespan is limited... do you really think that one is totally so mobile that he can go to another place and rebuild everything again? naviety is in the air i would say...
globally mobile are for those that has NOTHING to leave behind!! no real friends, no careing relatives and family... they are wat many people called the NO-LIFERS group

Despite all the gripes of poor officer decisions and bad management performance, rarely does one make a decision easily to take command of one's own LIFE to be an Officer, so that one's own LIFE is not in the hands of someone who is less capable than oneself.Originally posted by audix:yup... agreed.

It is odd that each time when a NSF soldier is given the opportunity to attend OCS, probably 8 out of 10 will not accept the offer for a variety of reasons:
- longer NSF active service period
- heavier responsibilities
- more work
- more disruptions to lifestyle
- etc, etc
The first six months after OCS will probably be the first time that an "A" Level or "Poly" certified individual would have taken command of a Platoon of Human Beings.
It will be his first taste in Human Management, mistakes are bound to be made when making a decision from a number of choice and directions that is available, depending on the situations at hand.
After two years of NSF, and as the years go by, the same "green horn" Officer would have matured, and will be a Leader of Men.
So if given the opportunity to lead, one should better take it, even if it is as a First Class Private; otherwise quit complaining about poor leadership that is leading oneself. -

they believed they are above the specs and the men. they doesn't care how the men feel. All they want is to meet their objectives of their work plan and get promoted.
They are the 'black' sheep of the Officers corp!

If you feel that your SAF Officers and NCO's have no feelings for you, or your well being, or your physical and mental state - have you ever considered that this is part of the conditioning during training?
How much goodwill, empathy, sympathy, or charity will the enemy Officer and NCO offer you, if ever you are captured in war, or kidnapped when you are on vacation?
If it is no longer in a training environment, and the Officer and NCO still maintain this kind of attitude towards their subordinates, it could be due to a number of reasons.
- the work that you are doing is dangerous
- the work that you are doing requires high standard of performance
- the work that you are doing does not allow screw-ups.
- you guys are seen to be too soft
- you guys are seen to be "enterprising"
- you guys are seen to be sloppy
- your standards are too low for a well oiled SAF machinery
- there is a mismatch in your goals and that of your commanders
You will be surprised how your Commanders will change if you speak your mind in a sincere open way during the One-on-One Interview of your "Periodical Performance Review". -
What I reckon is, most Officers are chosen in BMT due to their ability to communicate with their fellow recruits, and that lots of recruits look up to them. SAF sees that as a key criteria because the moment your men starts giving you nonsense, that is the point failure is inevitable.
However the thing is, your men may look up to you with the upmost respect, but at the end of the day, if you don't have the skill or tactics, group 40 men will be dead in seconds in times of war.
Specialist on the other hand, have the most experience. Though lower rank than an Officer, they are Commanders after all.
I always believe while the Specialist or Warrant Officers are in the mud training with their men, Officers are there drinking wine... watching tv, doing paper work.
Makes a whole lot difference. -
I believe in the event of a war, our ministers will probably be on the 1st flight outta singapore.
Then when the people started questioning them, they will claim that their survival is important cos they are coordinating the war from a safe place......
