Malaysia's opposition said on Saturday it has won a critical by-election seen as a test of the coalition government's popularity after disastrous national polls last year.
The official tally showed that with only a few hundred votes left to be counted, the opposition candidate had a lead of 2,424 votes with 32,393 ballots, against 29,969 for the Barisan Nasional coalition.
"Yes we have won," said Husam Musa, vice-president of the Islamic party PAS, which fielded the candidate on behalf of the three-party opposition alliance.
