SINGAPORE: Singapore's sovereign wealth funds - the Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC) and Temasek Holdings - have performed better than global equity markets last year.
Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said this in a written reply to a parliamentary question from a Member of Parliament.
He said: "Investments by GIC and Temasek have inevitably been affected, like those of other global investors.
"However, their overall value has fallen by less than the decline in global equity markets, as they (GIC and Temasek) maintain diversified portfolios and had taken precautionary actions early in the (financial) crisis to reduce their exposures to the equity markets."
The finance minister, however, did not give details on the extent of losses suffered by GIC and Temasek.
Key global markets took a severe beating last year, with the MSCI World Equities Index falling by 42 per cent.

3 months of "extreme" electricity pricing really made a difference in their year end profit figures.
We really have to thank all Singaporeans who contributed by paying more for electricity. ![]()
Keep up the good work. ![]()

In the past, crude oil below US$ 40, I pay SG$0.16 /kwh of electricity.
Now crude oil US$40, I pay SG$0.23 /kwh electricity.
But then again, Ministers and top civil servants salary so much, else how to pay them.
How to take cooking lessons in Le Condom Blow?
How to fly chef to Japan to buy $50,000 sashimi for dinner?
How? How? How? ![]()
In the past, go toilet need 10 cent

Hahaha.....I wanted to add in policeman last time wear shorts now wear long pants. ![]()
But you see other toilets all charge 10 cents. Next I guess you will ask me to go over there lor.
Everywhere pay 10 cents, makes me wonder if the toilet cleaner is taking me for an idiot. But too bad we can't use the other toilets, because it's too far away and we have to succumb overselves to the exploitation of this toilet owner. ![]()
Wise people change the environment to suit their needs (e.g. aircon, jetliners, cruise ships), while fools change themselves to suit the environment.

Some are not fools, they look like fools because they succumb to temptation of financial rewards and bow to the wrong master. ![]()
A dog will wag it's tail at the master and growl at it's master's enemies. ![]()
Doing so will ensure that the dog is well fed and looked after, the dog is only serving it's own selfish interest at the expense of the majority. ![]()

Why did botak not talk about the many losses by Temasek?
I outperform them.
I have no money so I didn't invest in any shares at all.
My return is 0%. ![]()
I read from sintercom once, there was this guy who said.
Since Temasek earning so good every year.
Why not leave all the money of CPF with Temasek? ![]()
Then won't all of the price increases be an exercise in futility. ![]()
All the price increases will go back to Singaporeans instead of ending up with the gov.

I keep wondering what prompted him to use the words "lesser mortals" .
When you are talking to people, do you even use such language?
It looks more like what Gandalf would say to Frodo in the LOTR. ![]()

I read somewhere that people are speculating that GST will be increased but the government will as usual, do their GST rebate thing to "cushion" the impact.
Looks like they really need the money.
To help the poor. ![]()

I am not sure if they are going to hold back the next GST increase since we are in the recession. Was around in the auditing firm and saw the system there already programmed the future GST rates liao.
MSCI World Equities Index falling by 42 per cent. If GIC and Temasek S$300 Billion portfolio falling by 40% will be considered beating the market.
Is this a good comparison? MSCI World Equities Index compares only equities. GIC and Temasek have properties and bonds too.
Assuming GIC and Temasek beat the MSCI World Equities Index as above. It's a loss of S$120 Billion.
No wonder our ministars tell us not to retire lah, how to pay like that? ![]()
I don't know how much their portfolio have fallen, but I would speculate that their equity portfolio alone has performed far worst than MSCI
World Equities Index. Look at Citi and BOA you will know why. ![]()
only the ministers' salaries remain stable.
Properties will be the next big thing to fall.
There is also speculation that the bond market is in a bubble too, so that might be due for a correction.
Doesn't look too good for anybody even with a diversified portfolio. ![]()
just curious, does temasek/ GIC own GLCs like DBS, Keppel Land, SMRT etc. ?
If so, their profits would be considered a gain to Temasek as well right ?
Hi all
outperform DOES NOT MEAN Temasek made profits.
Outperform can also mean that Temasek did not lose as much money as the benchmark
World indices lost 42% of value.
If Temasek lost only 41.9% of our total value, it's also considered outperform.
The point is, the article did not say exactly what was Temasek's performance. Thus outperform can mean many things. The article does not tell us anything at all, except what we already know, that we lost money (though how much, no one knows)
