Uncle, British took our guys as Coolies you know, and our gals as samsu women. They took away millions from us...but one thing they left behind that was one of the reason we become successful is ENGLISH that transcend us to education.

It is even worse here now. Now we have a senile old despot sucking away hundreds of billions and letting his gambling addicted daughter in law lose billions to foreigners... British (Barclays), Americans (Merril Lynch) and even Thais (Shin Corp)
you now agree that "the British milked and sucked HK" right?
you haven't answer the question on what "foundation for success" did the British laid, and what did the brits (take so long to) build up?

That is a little too much power given to any ruling party in my opinion. Still, even with less than 2/3, the ruling party still can rule EFFECTIVELY, just that their bills can still be subject to vetos. But since our President hardly disapproves of any bills, a less than 2/3 majority of seats is good and effective enough.

They said singapore will be flop within 5 to 10 yrs. Singapore looks rich only from the outside poor on the inside. Because many people are suffering under poverty. You better rethink of migrating to another country like canada, Australia, UK etc because this singaporeship is sinking. Here afterwards you can find future both in china and India. And if you belong to the minority group either Malay or Indian your future is in deep trouble as you do not know mandrin.
Is Singapore really going down? will we not see economic success as in the past? Are we going backwards? Can singapore survive for next 50 yrs? Can singapore government efficiently manage singapore after LKY? Is singapore a future " Bankok" or even future "Malaysia or Indonesia".
Pardon me, I am not good in either economics and business so can some knowledgable person educate me in good english because my singlish is very poor.
If people's words can be trusted, Singapore wouldn't have floated in the first place. 40 years ago, we had way more people who are poor, we were a successful port yes, but not really that important. Today Singapore is one of the five most important ports in the world and run one of the most import oil refinary business in the region. 40 years ago, if Singapore sinks, Singapore sinks. Today, if Singapore sinks, the world goes down with us.
Yes and no. Economics are always in fluctuation.

how much more naive can you get. 90% of the world population probably doesnt even know that Singapore exists. And the other 99.9999999% wont even give a shit because China could literally build an exact replica of Singapore in a couple of years.
if noone gives a shit, why then are you here posting?

Singapore will only sink IF YOU LET IT. This is the home of your forefathers and mine, who had contributed a lot to our well being. The schools, the roads, the flats, the racial harmony, etc, is built through blood, sweat and toil for no one else, but us.
Our boys sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their youth in our national service-civil defence and military, as well as regulars, accepting dictatorial rule, for the military is not meant to practice democracy but to preserve democracy for no one else, but us.
Many other nations can easily built another Singapore, but it wont be the same, with the unique qualities that we singaporeans feel but not see - a soul we deny that it exists for fear of being seemed sentimental in this merciless world.
When Singapore is no more and we are dispersed into the cruel world, Singapore will then be remembered with fondness, a racial, economic and political harmonious golden era that is gone forever.
Rather than for that to happen, it can still be avoided. We are in a crisis now, and it takes all hands to ensure each and everyone's survival. It's not a time for each to think for themselves. It is time to think of your family, your relatives, your neighbours and your friends.
Alone, we will die. Savings will be depleted over time, and this crisis will be a long one. It will take more than one head and hand to overcome the most difficult period in Singapore's modern history, but it is not something that our forefathers had never encountered and overcome before.
The japs tried to murder us all, but in the end, our forefathers outlasted them. So too can we, outlast whatever fate throws at us, for fate can be altered thru human willpower and mental strength.
This is your one and only home, a legacy left by our forefathers for us and our next generation. The fate of our nation is in your hands. There are no excuses if we fail the test of our time....

Our gals sacrificed their courtship when the boys go to Army, the gals have to uphold the workload of the economy, and sad to say, most boys become so lame to say that only they sacrifice for the country and forgotton our gals role, for all boys, there are mothers who shed tears and caring till their boys grew up, be a soldier, be discipline, get a good career and married to the right true woman. All these are sacrification of sg woman to the country of Singapore.
We gals understand the magic of failure, unlike the boys, who dun accept failure and believed in must win, must be on top, must be strong and long stuff...if singapore is to go down, for we gals, so be it, we still carry on our struggle, unlike most boys, they would rather lost their soul in pubs, drinks, smokes, nighclubs and red light districts rather than bring themselves up for further education, retraining, reskilling and re adaptation.
We gals understand that everything cannot be successful for long, we understood that in blowing balloon, it must burst eventually. And more importantly, we understand that failure is the begining of success, without down, how can you define up???
UNDERSTAND!!!

You may be right about average Earthlings not knowing that we exist, but that doesn't mean Singapore is not important, it just mean 90% of the world population are ignorant. China may be able to replicate Singapore's port facility, but it cannot replicate our position. One of the reason why we are so successful and important is because a lot of Asia's imports actually comes to Singapore and break down into smaller shippings before shipping out into their final destinations. In order to replace Singapore, the location has to be near us, probably in Malaysia or some parts of Indonesia. But even if they possess the location, unless they can replicate Singapore fast enough to handle all the amount of shippings, goods will be held up at the ports for a very long time. This will drive up costs by quite a lot, not to mention that a lot of the goods are perishables.
Singapore is one of the 5 most important ports in the world in the busiest shipping lane. Since most of the world's commodities are shipped around the world, you cannot expect us to "sink" without the world feeling an impact. I know that a lot of pple think we are just a Pisai country or just a small red dot, but we are actually a lot more important that most of us know.

Hmmm..so wisely said, Port Pelapas, Malaysia Johore was build as a carbon copy of our port, remember a big shipping company moved there, and more and wanted to follow, but then look at Pelapas now, no ship lah

If the want to, with their experience in creating the "Three Gorges Dam" they can build the "Kra Isthmus Canal"... and with the despots siphoning money and gambling away the reserves.... whatever Singaporeans do will be too little too late, for being so apatehtic when the despots persecute dissidents and opposition, now.
To fellow Singaporeans, we aint dead yet nor will ever be as long as we dont give up:-
JAI HO !!!
(May victory be yours!)

Errr.....are you implying that China is treating their dissidents and opposition better than Singapore or that the Chinese are less apathetic?
If that is not what you are implying....as in China is indeed treating its dissidents far worse than Singapore and that the Chinese are in general, less concerned about the fate of their own dissidents, then, in accordance to your own logic of "persecuting dissendents + more apathetic = eventual failure", why should we be worried about them?

Let's see, HyperionDCZ: said and I quote, "because China could literally build an exact replica of Singapore"
You said and I quote, " In order to replace Singapore, the location has to be near us, probably in Malaysia or some parts of Indonesia."
I mentioned ""China" and "the "Kra Isthmus Canal" You can't follow the logical flow of thought?
You can and by changing the subject, you are conceeding the point?
