Both Angel and Poh were perfectly on-topic. They responded to xtreyer's scenario by putting his question into the context of the Singapore government, which is the PAP, dealing with MNCs. For a government, in fact any government, does anyone really think that they are a group of self-sacrificing, altruistic 'leaders'? Who believes that? The object of power is power. And as power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. As evident from the disparate gap between the lives of national leaders and the common people, it is clear who is serving who.
The issue is that xtreyier, for a man of 'science', simply lives in a world of theory. He must be one of those theoretical 'scientists'. Just like the topic on protectionism, he surrounds himself with theoretical outcomes while engages in name-calling when anyone tries to inject a degree of realism by taking into consideration corruption and conspiracy.

Couldn't agree more.
xtreyier seems to be a person who cannot take opposing views, choosing to respond with either (1) hurling personal insults, or (2) choosing to run away from the thread.
He starts off trying to look mature, but after some time, the cracks start to appear. You can see the immaturity manifesting the moment his weak stance gets questioned. Then, he tries to divert the attention away by insulting others.
Lots of pompous crap around. ![]()

Looks like its option 2 for him this time.

*shrugs* people like him will never learn.
Where you fall down, is where you should get back on your knees again. Running away means he will forever live in his toady well.
Let me tell you something more about the realities of life.
The world is in a total mess. The US MNC I am working for has also been impacted pretty badly. This is when you start to see the true colors of people, INCLUDING management.
A manager (in my idealistic view) should be one that is able to see the long-term view of the company, to make decisions on certain undertakings that is good for the long-term of the company. Or he/she is one that takes good care of his people.
What I am seeing now is that the highest heads of my dept, whom are in US, are more concerned with keeping their jobs, than it is to keep the jobs of the people under them. In addition, they no longer are interested in projects that bring value to the company, but which takes up to 6 mths to complete. All they care about now is about looking impt, doing fire-fighting, focusing on keeping their jobs.
This is the REALITY of the world. Virtuous leadership is rare and almost extinct. Practical leadership exists throughout. People like the threadstarter live in another world, thinking that our leaders in SG are concerned with the citizens, when in fact, they are more concerned with their own jobs (They don't serve the people, they treat politics as a career).
In fact, the threadstarter looks to be no more than just a student, building castles in the air. He should wake up and face the reality, he cannot survive in this dangerous world
I will be happy to have more jobs created in these times.
But on the other hand, I will have to study on the effect of these.

Well the way i see it, a system of free competition always favor the most dishonest.
In a contest of virtuous men, only the least virtuous would win out. Don't think it's limited to just SG's leaders, that would just be inflating their abilities.

Very much agree. And yes, you are right that it's normal fare and we should not give extra credit to SG leaders.
But the threadstarter was talking about honest leadership, and condemning me for telling him the realities of life, (that our leaders have multiple objectives in all they do, since they behave like a corporation). He believes naively in the idea that our leaders are self-sacrificing and put citizens in front of everything else.
He said that what I described is utter evil.
I say that he is just a kid, coz there is no such thing as utter evil in the world. It's just a perspective of things. This is just a practicality of life.
And he is in hiding, not daring to face up to the realities of life.

Thats what happens when our entire social, economic and political system is based on fucking someone else to make another buck. Paraphrasing Edgar Allen Poe, "To worldly success, villainy is a surer path than virtue".
If you want to go with the flow, you must lose your humanity. Being human, placing human concerns above all else.
