Consider some Foreign workers, bangadeshi or indians or even PRC with no education, they spit and talk loudly, sit on grass patches, littered here and there, talk rudely and most of us will said that they are lack of education. I agreed, but that doesn't meant they are stupid or lazy, it is just they do not hv the chance to be educated.
Therefore, the primary focus of education is to bring about a well behaved, good moral and disciplined person who can align one right thinking and share with others. As for knowledge, whether you applied in your daily working life or not, is another issue of education.

then again, it is rather uniquely Singapore to have such a thriving tuition community out there... Perhaps it's an indication that Singapore education system is insufficient?
I do agree that it is, the classes are too big and the teachers are being churned out out of the Teachers College with no idea how what they're teaching are being employed in the industry.
They only pass on the information they were given, having no idea how they're meant to be used, so it's kinda redundant to expect students to understand it when the teachers themselves hardly do.

to be fair for teachers (for my gf is one), they do know what they want to teach.
But... red tape, bureacracy, extremely bad office politics, CCAs, excessive admin work, etc, all attempt to make sure that teacher cannot teach at their best by stressing them up.
And especially from senior teachers, to bulldoze their way through junior teachers, they can simply claim: "it's MOE's directives"

What are you talking about??
Sure our education does not teach people to cheat, betray people etc but neither does it advocates people to be morally-upright.

What i am trying to bring across is do not alway take education as a venue to create inventor or genius, instead take education as part of a longlife education that in primary, teaches one to be good and secondary, to be knowledgeable.
However these thread is advocating that education should be change to create inventor or top business pples, which is ultimately wrong, 10 bosses out of singapore, 7 are not graduates

There is a weakness in education system..The current education does not really gives people "space" to find out ,"to think" and to pursue one's interest. Singaporean are expected to follow a standard guideline and somehow misleading into believing to achieve "this particular theology set up the government". We all born free, with different personality inclination. The environment that i find in singapore is rather restrictive, it does not encourage people to discover who they are and either do most of us find people being encouraging when we try to be different; to help nuture the talent within all of us and make it all possible.
In a way, education brainwashs people. The government use this media intending to imput certain views into unsuspected people. I don't think it is all bad. If you teach good things, there could be great but our government isn't really doing so.
And yes, i do agreed that world-class education should teach educated people about having social responsibility and basic values. I could advocate people to think for themselves about what is good and what is bad.. and to do it.

Everything must follow the dictates of PAP regime.
Everything all state propaganda.

Don't anyhow decide there are no intellectual life in Singapore. That's utter arrogance worse than LKY and insults everyone who tries their best to live life.
