Malay is actually a dialect, the real language is Arab...that is why in bahasa malay they use english letter to subsitute is vowels. As when english and dutch took over malay peninsular and indonesia, malay was a dialect, so to enable them to be written and pronounced, the english and dutch introduce them to ABC.

Well, i can see that skythewood does not speak dialect. And he doesnt feel a sense of belonging to it either. He's an example of those who have lost touch with their roots thru no fault of theirs.
However, there are also many others whose connection within the family stems from speaking dialect. My granny can only speak dialect, so if i dunno cantonese, i would have lost out on communication with the best grandma in the world big time.

It's kinda a bigger problem for Singaporeans i think if we still expect LKY to provide the answers now.
But for what it's worth, i think he did the right thing by encouraging English and Chinese more. Not the popular thing mind you, but the logical choice.
