The china chinese are all learning English – our singaporean advantage of knowing 2 language are eroding….....So what is next advantage…....killing dialects…....not a solution to me !!!
LKY did not provide an answer….....how to defend our competitive advantageChina people still speak chinese... the world have about 6 billion people, 1.3 billion is chinese. the opportunity is still there... unless you tell me china don't teach chinese anymore.

Dialect is what keeps businesses in singapore so well oiled, and running day by day.
At top management executive level, its just feelee fehleh english. But the below that keeps the top running, its dialect.How many hawker centres you go to and speak like that" Hello stallholder, I would like to order broad noodles, dry, no chilli, fishballs only, no fishcake slices. Cut the lard."

i speak canto, understand hokkien, a bit of teochew.
i don't see the value in it, because it has no future. but people are still free to learn it if they want to.

Yes logical choice. But if LKY really means what he says, then he should also understand that the language problem is more than skin deep. The youngsters these days who only speak eng and mandarin and know zilch about dialects, are they speaking these 2 languages well? Some but majority are not. I only have to take the bus and mrt to know. -

value or no value, knowing is better than not knowing, our hokkien is good to use in taiwan and fujian, our cantonese is good to use in most chinatowns around the world and especially KL and HK.And our Hainan Chicken Rice is famous too...so is Hakka You tao fu and Hokkien mee...

so in the future, will taiwanese understand english or chinese or not, make that clear.
for your scenario of old people come singapore, if they meet people who speak canto, good for them. if they don't meet, too bad.
what would they think? why they assume singaporeans speak canto? what about teochew, hokkien, hainnan, tekka?

Our forefathers worked hard to build up Singapore to its current staus, that Lee Kuan Yew can so casually disregard the culture of our forefathers speaks a lot about his character and how much value he sees in local culture and tradition.
Lee Kuan Yew should feel ashamed of himself.
He is not fit to be leader of the people here.
Everyone is proud of their culture, want to preserve it, except this anglo dog Lee Kuan Yew.
As a chinese Singaporean I feel ashamed to have this type of anglo dog chinese as leader.
I wonder whether the other ethnic groups in singapore will look down at us for having such a leader as lee Kuan Yew that looks so low at the chinese dialect culture.
