The 1940s was a turbulent time, more so for many whom had seen their protectors fled, their loved ones molested or murdered and kept in poverty. There can be no excuse for dishonour and loss of integrity, but such words are easily spoken today when you and I are living in independence, intelligence and peace, rather than someone else suffering the horrors of war.
Each live with his own conscience, and let others judge his contributions.
The Brits lost. In war all is fair. But they did fight back. What about Force Z? If not perhaps you will be typing Jap not English!

What they have done right now is means testing, depriving some citizens from benefits? Means testing to me is like, when you go to a foodcourt, the supervisor there assess your ability to pay, refuses you entry to the foodcourt and force you to dine in Pontini. When they reduce the so called medical "subsidies" it increases their surplus, the less they spend, the more they make. Maybe set up more ERP gantries, higher fines, petrol tax, HDBs, lengthening withdrawal age for CPF, etc.
You will be surprised the list of the increased % has already been keyed in the system of the auditing firm. next is 9%.

Yes, mean testing, I forget. Thanks for reminding. Before election promise no, after election implement.
Anyway more money in the coffer doesn't mean better living overall for the people.
People are just too afraid to go out of the pot that is slowly heated up, not to kill but scald.
The money is the coffer is a feel good factor for them, it's like a report card that they have amassed lots of reserves, but reality is most of the money came from the citizens. The only time they have distributed thousands of dollars to citizens is when there is an election. ![]()
Everybody speculated election soon, but I am thinking, they didn't distributed thousands, who is going to vote for them. ![]()
Also, if the opposition wins, they are also walking into a trap. Everything is so messed up now that I don't think any credible opposition can do much. Even if opposition manages to get reins of government, their performance will be lack lustre and PAP can come back in the next election to tell the people that opposition can't do a good job. It's like "I told you so" kind of scenario.
Why didn't we get more cash distribution from the government this year? It's because they already lost US$ 100 billion, they can't afford to distribute much now, they need to keep their ammunition for the coming election.

Yeah, I have and I did. By the time I was in JC something already struck me as being not quite right, and as I went along I looked at how excessive control was being exerted in a situation where the example of Japan's expanding economy had already shown five years prior that people needed to be pushed forward, not yanked back by leashes. Yet Singapore's culture was one of adamant complacency that "yes sir, no sir, three bags full" was the way to go, and actively went out of its way to stamp out independent thought.
Another one lost due to PAP repression.
This bastard PAP.

Is it?
It will definitely not overtake Australia's GST.

No sense crying about it - I'm not. Hell, deciding to leave was one of the most profitable decisions I ever made.
I read that some cities in Australia n US are cheaper to live in than Spore.
No sense crying about it - I'm not.
Actually I already sensed that there was something wrong with Singapore society during my secondary schools days.
I didn't know what it was but I could feel it.
It must be the same case with you.

How to speed up the recovery of the lost billions? A big question mark?
With a faltering world economy and by banking on another banks ( I think the keyboard can only type banks) in hope that the dragon can swim out of a tin can, they might be heading into another free fall later.Just like a lame gambler betting red after losing on the black. Where is the wisedom and credibilty?

pm lhl said sg is not a welfare state.
jojobeach, you are in U.S now, compared to Singapore the political environment must be one heaven one earth - correct?

Aussies do not have GST on the essentials.

Well, what it was for me is actually quite simple. Even as primary school kids you'd realise that while a chauffer looked pretty good driving a Mercedes, it was someone else's Mercedes that he was driving.
Taking the same principle writ large, Singapore was making a real reputation for itself as a manufacturing base for foreign companies; sure, we looked great churning out those millions of TVs, radios and PCBs, but we were still doing the dogs' body work for someone else. Japan started the same way, but by the 80's, countries like Singapore were manufacturing for them. When was it going to be Singapore's turn to own the Mercedes instead of simply driving it?
I started questioning what it would take for Singapore to move up, and that's when the cancerous quality of the Singaporean culture's obsession with control became obvious to me. I'll be the first to point out that I was looking after number one in deciding that my effort was better spent doing my thing in a placewhere I had the freedom to think for myself, instead of trying to change the minds of people who were more than happy to trudge along to someone else's command and control structure.

Well at least I know I don't get to squad in jail just because I don't agree with the government.
Freedom of Opinion and political speech are protected rights of the people.

Singapore wasn't like that in the past.
It was after Lee Kuan Yew came to power and the endless arrests, endless crackdowns, endless propaganda that drove us to such a state.
Really has nothing but intense and deep hatred for that mother fucker.

I envy that you have papers there where people can give independent and diverse views.
Although there is also a limit to that.

As I said earlier, to be fair, tight control was required during the early days to keep the ship afloat. The problem is that by the 80's, such control went from being a necessity to being a liability, but few people noticed.

Australia also don't have property tax on owner occupied housing (meaning 0% property taxes). The white shirt supporter will probably tell you, if you not happy move to Australia to live then. ![]()
