Next Retrenchment

More and more companies retrenching ppl.....will it continue???i wonder which is the next big company tat retrench its staff...
wat happen to the ppl witout jobs...........will end up stealin n robbing?hope it will recover in a yr's time... -
retrenchment is the last resort
some ppl accept pay-cut or opt for early retirement....
singaporeans is a calm lot when it comes to this thing.....compared to other countries....who went on the streets and protest
times are tough.....some things are inevitable....it seems cruel but mus wei da ju zhao xiang.....
ppl who are retrenched are given compensation
the older ppl take this oppurtunity to "retire" with a lump sum
young ppl can always find another job, or take the chance to upgrade their skills to better prepare for the future..... -
Don't think it was the last resort for places like PSA. Their accursed weasel union sellouts who were hugging those who were given the pink slips were probably not fired to ensure the union's silence.
That, can be forgiven.
However, the weasels were told to echo the management's BS about having to retrench before they start posting losses. PSA was actually posting profits when the people were retrenched!

i think it has a lot to do with how old u are, what u used to do and your current expectations...
i mean... if u're like 30+, 40, or even 50, its definitely very hard to get another job... and these people have families to feed so asking them to take on just ANY job is usually not an option... any job they take must enable them to feed their families...
for younger workers, time's on their side so its not that hard to get another job if they're not too fussy...
and teaching is quite saturated now lah... moe wants to attract former professionals into teaching so those who do choose to make a mid-career shift stand a pretty ok chance actually... but fresh grads with average results do get rejected
cos they're not dumb... they know these people will move on as soon as they get another opportunity elsewhere...
i for one won't even consider teaching... i hate kids -

Yah! They didn't even bother to hide it this time.
The previous price increase was due to "losses". They were actually paper losses! They lumped their depreciation all together and also took into account their "investments" in property which lost a whole lot of money.
So they posted a loss.
The next year, they posted an obscene profit which did not come from the increase in revenue but because their expenses suddenly shrank because there one-time losses the year before was not there anymore.
I guess they figured out people would just accept it with a shrug and resignation... so they didn't even bother to doctor the books.
We live in a country where the bottom-line is worshipped, damn the citizens!
There can be only one way to go.. like the joho wrote, Singapore is a sinking ship.

Reason they give? They cannot afford to go into deficit. Well, at least that's what BG Lee said. Maybe there's some truth in it, but I think they have to explain it in idiot's way so that everyone can understand.
One more think. I was wondering......After they start making healthy profits, are they going to cut down the fares??
The North MRT line issue also very complicated. They used all so high tech equipment then they have to raise the fares for them again. Peabrains. Did I spell it correctly? -
It seems to me that it's all the big companies axing people. How come not so much mention on smaller companies??

A few years ago, they posted a "loss" which was their reason to increase fares.
I was looking at the bloodsucking leeches trying to tell us that they made the line fully automated and it costs more. What kind of stupid braindeath does that??
You hire some train drivers and the cost is reduced, you give employment to some, everyone profits! But no.. they have to make it fully automated at an enormous cost.

In 2000 and 2001, the private businesses and manufacturers were urged and prodded by NTUC to seriously consider retraining the workers and redeploy the loyal workers to other positions.
Retrenchment is to be the last and final solution - and never to be the first option.
The private businesses and manufacturers were "scolded" by NTUC for being irresponsible in their quick decision to retrench, just when a "chill wind blow" and they caught a "sudden cold".
These businesses and manufacturers were way ahead of the Singapore Government and NTUC in 2000 and 2001, and foresaw the coming storm, and were already trimming their fat to weather the storm.
It is only now, in 2003, that the Government Linked Companies (GLC) are reacting like some slow moving giants, to trim their excess fat and doing it at a time when their profits are still relatively high - compared to those businesses and manufacturers in 2000 and 2001.
Some may say that this shows the compassion of the GLCs in delaying the cut. However, the present action is illogical when performed under circumstances of profitable operation. The exercise could have been phased in on an annual basis, or on a natural attrition through resignation and retirement from 2000.
What would happen, if those companies had listened to NTUC in 2000 and 2001, and did not start the trimming exercise then?
We would see mass retrenchment on a bigger scale from 2002 to the present time, causing a bigger panic and pressure to the employment scene, and affecting economic confidence. -
We are basically running a tripartite system here.. everyone knows. Seriously, I wont know of how much power and representations that unions have in really representing the working population. The government rationalize the importance of industrial relations by putting a minister in charge of the unions. But when it comes to really retrenching people, going through all the cpf cuts and then now having to watch it stay where it is for another 2 years (who knows maybe more), the unions practically just does whatever the government says or recommends and there really dun seem to be any active fight-back at all... whatever is said is just swallowed and accepted as the right pill to cure the economy...
And all the sayings about how we need to lower costs, and accept foerign talents... for the better of the economy... the workers? the population in general...wat happens to them? everyone in singapore has practically resigned to fate already.. no struggle etc... everything is just controlled by the govt...
In the long run.. is this really good? All our future is at stake here.. I m not asking for an open revolt or anti-pap... but.. its really sad.. to already see what is in store for us and that there dun seem to be any recourse..

He was seen as an “agitator” by the British Internal Security Department, and it was due to his brilliant educational achievements in England, that convinced the British Colonial Government that this Labor Activist is not a Communist Agitator.
It was his involvement with the Trade Unions that opened SM LeeÂ’s eyes to the possibilities of anyone riding the back of the Trade Union "tiger" to coerce Governments and the Communities to do its bidding.
Those early days of labor agitation against “unfair” British Colonial practices taught the young LKY that there must be a tight grip on the reins of Trade Unions.
No other practicing democratic country in the Free World, has a Trade Union Leader holding any Cabinet positions.
No other countries in the supposed Free World, except those found in the Communist States, has its ideology expounding the heroic contributions of the mass labor movements.
If Trade Unions are supposed to be apolitical, then the PAP Government has contradicted their own position by politicizing the NTUC with the Secretary-General being a PAP Member and a Cabinet Minister too.
If Trade Unions are supposed to be apolitical, and its sole purpose is to serve all workers of Singapore, one can only wonder why the monopoly of Union management is only exclusive to only one party. Why are Union Members denied membership or disallowed Union Management Positions, if they are active members of Opposition Parties? -
When Singapore starts to retrench teachers, it is time to press the alarm again.
