from my personal opinion .. i think we shouldnt go there if we are patriotic enough...and i think we are helping them with their economy if went there to shop. although some ppl might think that it is cheaper to buy there and i understand their plight since they might come from the lower income group. i think we should do shopping in our country as this we help our economy.

If I go there to boost their economy after what Dr M had said, I'll be a no pride low life.......

cheaper? please lah... u probably need a car to go in there and hoard groceries... u paid a fortune to buy the car + coe... don't tell me these people no money left to buy groceries after that ah?
its a weak argument... as for people with no car, it quite unlikely for them to go JB and hoard groceries lor... too inconvenient and very difficult to carry.
so the people going in specifically to pull this crazy stunt are really the people who least need the cost savings... the got enough money, but ngiao chee, ngiao lan category.
my family used to do that... go jb visit relatives, visit the hypermarkets and buy some stuff and on the way back, top up petrol.
its a good idea for a day's outing for the family. we don't particularly go there specifically for the cost-savings. recently more busy lah so never go for quite long already... not due to cross-straits tension either.
i think this is the more significant aspect of cross-straits ties: that many people have families on the other side. and they don't really care about the politics. when they meet, they don't talk about water or airspace or island.
how to quantify who needs to go, who can go and who shouldn't go???

It is like this, imagine yourself trying to cook someone. You can't possibly bathe him in 100 degree of hot water as he will not agree, but you can put him in warm water first, turn up the tempreatured 1 degree at a time until he's so cooked and doesn't know it.
with that many singaporeans do not realise that malaysians have sinister intentions, they are not so nice as they seem to be, from the front they want us to spend money at their shopping malls, assure us that the current issues are resolvable that singapore and malaysia destinies are tied together all that BS ... then they run through our pockets by competing with us in the legal arena like container ports, air passenger/cargo ... nothing wrong with that right? all nice and legal right? They have all the land oil palm and natural resources, instead of developing those they choose to compete with us on what we need to survive. I say they are trying to weaken us or come on par with us on the economic front.
On the military front in recent years they have bought a range if equipment ranging from sophisticated long range russian/american jet fighters, state of the art submarines, Thermobaric weapons type used by russina to roast afganistans in the 80's, missle artilliary systems from brazil, howitzers that outclass our own, 200 odd infantry fighting vehicles from middle-east and more recently a big batch of polish high tech main battle tanks. Now they are trying to train 450,000 national service man

During our national day event, 10,000 paratroopers(special forces units) from malaysia and indonesia jumped from planes and landed approx 10km from the johore border in mersing. 10KM is a symbolic mark because 30 km away is where our lifeline-PUB pumps are located. They landed in between us and the pumps and waited to see our reaction. Convince me this is not a sinister intention.
I was at home that time and we were having house guests over for dinner and I was watching TV. First time I ever saw the Fighting Spirit flashed on TV. One of our guest was a Major from amoured unit was simultaneous paged and asked to return to unit, his wife and children looked on fearfully.
One day we will have to face them, it will be a very hard fight, even if there are singaporeans in this forum who frequently go spending in malayisa who think current spate of issues are government problems and not theirs, don't think like that becasue it is your problem. If you don't care about these issues at least turn and look at your son or brother or cousin who may one day have to face them with such type of odds.

It is a free world how u spent yr $ depends on individual case - it depends if yr income comes from yr investment in our neigbour ctyor not (alot of Biz PP or normal folk hv invested in hses, Condo. in Malaysia and may now depending on the rental income for eir daily living expenses bec. ey might hv less or no income alrdy in S'pore. This especially so for ose in the retirement or near retirement age grp who still hv schl going children to feed ) . Hence, it really depends where u stand . It is basic survival I believe no one is willing to do that unless cost effective.
It is best for the normal folks for each cty if there is harmony but of cse this seems to be quite difficult just like the " Katong Neighours Case" at the end only their lawyers benefitted from it. So better to have peace for all . -

My stand is that most citizens (from M'sia & S'pore) just wants to live in peace. Yet, the government keeps raking up issues that disturbs this peace and agonises relations..... I'd still like to shop in M'sia if I could.
I (want to) believe that the majority of Malaysian citizens have nothing against us initially. It's just the politics that screws us all..... -

You see the connection there? Doesn't matter if the pipes are underground or hanging 2 km up in the air because from their side of the border they can literally cut it Once that bridge is seperated. And once the bridge is seperated your amoured units can't swim, even if you manage to overcome this obstacle, you have to contend with spec-ops units guarding the pumps, heavily armed with thermobaric weapons waiting for you. Their generals and hawks have reiterated before that they will poison us or blow up our pumps before we can approach it.
I know it is unfair for me to say this but in the end the money you spend in malaysia to buy cheaper food to feed your schooling children will go to finance their military machine, and when your children grow up, pray that they will never be asked to go to war to face the odds that you helped finance. -
paul, I must say that it sounds a little bit far-fetched. That, our neighbours harbor sinister thoughts on us. I wouldn't like to believe it. But, I cannot disagree w a possibility that what you said could be true. It's like... a way Malaysia can protect itself and it's interests completely from us.

Myanmmar is a armed force of 420,000 regular soldiers. If anybody thailand should be the one to have national service for armed forces to beef their defence but they don't. So then why is there a need to train 450,000 conscripts when you don't even have a land border with myanmmar. The incident in 89 didn't appear in the news but was discussed in parliament. All I have said is true, they appeared in the media, newspapers and magazines at one time or another in bits and pieces. It's up to you to go piece them together.

well, regarding their recent arms acquisition, i think its inevitable... u can't expect your neighbours to be forever in the stone age... they will want to arm themselves sooner or later.
if anyone should complain, i think its them we've been arming ourselves way out of proportions to our size for the past 30+ years...
as for their little toys, let them have their kicks... even if we didn't go shopping in jb, they'll still be able to squeeze money to buy equipment... face it... they're not mongolia, or papua new guinea... they have a functional and growing economy to sustain their military.

I think if anyone want to do a boycott, they should look at the country of origin of the products that they buy here in Malaysia first. Things like detergents, soap, food, Tvs, computers etc.
There is no use going up to boycott JB if people are still buying in Singapore, Malaysian made products.
What should be done is to pressure our government to reduce the price of items in their control so as to lighten the burden on our people. All this patriotic nonsense serves mainly to hurt the needy. If the government really care for its people, it must help the people who are in need by lowering prices. NOT start a pseudo campaign against an imaginary enemy.
For example, why the heck is magazines like the economist sold here at much higher prices than in JB? Both countries import it from overseas .. but yet converted, its so much cheaper there?
Same goes for the Halls sweets. Why does it cost RM1.00 in JB and S$0.60 here? The stuff is imported from CHINA! Surely because of our relationship with China, we can get it cheaper? And we have lower shipping costs as our port is NEARER than PTP from China?
All this points to the government keeping our S$ artifically high in order to protect their overseas investments. If we really want to save Singapore, we must lower our S$, too bad for those who invested overseas .. (they are traitors anyway) -
Singapore will always have to rely in other country's so-called generosity because of a single fact that will never crease to change... we do not have natural resources of our own.
We are depending on the service we provide in order to survive in this world. By not helping to come out with ways to lower our labour cost or service cost, we are not commercially viable.
Look at the number of manufacturing moving out of Singapore once they had developed or fine-tuned the manufacturing technology.
After hearing PM Goh's speech a couple of days ago, it has confirmed my thoughts on our country's economy... downhill without a foreseeable path of recovery if we continued on our current policies. -
