National Service isn't a waste of time. It's where the men of our country learn to defend their homeland, and it's mostly where they learn to be more responsible, a better leader etc.

NS is not a waste of time. Military Defence has in recent years became a deterrent rather a show of aggressive might. It contributes to better economy as no investors would dare to invest in a country that is politically instable or is very weak to defend itself. Ultimately, NS changes u. I became a more realistic person and mature after NS. I dun understand why people complain about NS, these people who complain will never become men cos being able to pass the physical tests do not make u a man, its the mental strength to take nonsense and go thru nonsense that makes a man.
just my view, no time to write coherently anyway. -

Bad points for NS.
the guys are behind time when they get out...
other than that, whether NS is considered a waste of time is up to the individual. He can spend his 2 or 2 1/2 yrs complaining, or he can choose to open his mind to new things and have fun while at eat though physically stressful.
For me, i don't think NS is a waste of time, i have learnt to communicate with strangers, met more people i wouldn't have met if i stayed in school or cooped up at home, learnt how important it is to get a proper job i like or how important study is...
Before NS i hated studying... but now that i've been through it, mixed with the Regulars, the uncles (warrants) who guided me and talked to me about the outside world compared to the SAF, i've learnt a whole lot more.
Basically i have nothing to complain about NS... I've been having fun in it since my enlistment. -

Ns is good for the economy. I would like to add on what gasband has said eariler on.
NS creates jobs for people. There's job security for people who join the army. Other than that, they also create jobs for people outside the army. The equipment and stuff they buy from others gives others a means to survive. Just by using outside catering for the food has already create jobs for a lot of people. -

we can never defend ourselves, our soldiers makes majority of our population, we are not like USA where their soldiers are soldiers and they have a huge army population to waste. Our soldiers are also society professionals. Graphic designers, programmers, artists, architects, businessmen, teachers, engineers etc . These are what we lose in a war.

Israel is big compared to Singapore. We lose easily because of our small population. We have limited terrain to fight, unlike Israel.

In real war,even u have only 5000 troops in hand ,you could also defeated 10000 without much hassle provided you have the 5 fundamental factors as mentioned in the Art of War
Conlusion is : Manpower is not the factor that determine victory ,however terrain is one of the factor.So regardless how small your population is ,as long the commanders are well verse in the art of war ,they can win the war easily.. -
