Well Shotgun, two men can generate more than enough firepower. Again, it's the weapons they carry and their skill. Firepower is not the noise of your shooting, or even the rounds that come out of your guns. Firepower is how much *effective* and *accurate* fire you produce. If your rounds aren't slamming into the tree the enemy is hiding behind or whistling past his ear (or burying themselves in his flesh), they don't count. Noise and wildly fired rounds won't pin trained soldiers down. Two well-trained and well-deployed men can generate more firepower than three poorly-trained ones. That's also why having good weapons is important (AHA back to the original thread topic!)
Your flank and attack tactic with the use of a firebase is already very common in SAF, and can be done well with the current 7 man section. It's one of the "standard" things a section learns to do. I will not say any more about that.
Regarding combat formations, yes, you don't have to fight "3-up", or all three groups abreast. A wedge ("1-up", not very common) or inverse wedge ("2-up", more common) can be employed on the attack. However, "3-up" brings all of your section's firepower to bear on the enemy, while the others do not. And if you aren't going to use all your weapons, then why did you carry them for the last 4 hours of your patrol?

Of course, fighting "2-up" gives you a reserve to replace casualties in the two forward groups while still on the assault, but why do that instead of just killing the enemy more effectively with all three groups in the first place? This is my own opinion (my superiors did not always agree with me).
Yes, it's true that yelling like mad sucks (although I have an extremely loud voice, so it is easier for me). However, radio can be jammed and is not as reliable. It is one thing to use radio for a lightning raid. If you are patrolling through the swamp for days, and living for weeks in a muddy, rain-filled trench, I don't think radio is such a good idea. What's good for special forces is not always good for everybody. If anything, I think section and platoon commanders should get some form of compact megaphone. That would help, though as soon as you pick it up and use it, all the enemy would focus on you.
