i think countries all over the world wan their economies to grow and all tt. putting guys away for 2 years when they r still young and spending lotsa money on the NS system definitely is not something tt helps in this directly. so den y there r countries like Israel and Taiwan tt still does NS? anyway yah, singapore models our NS system after these countries. so we r not new or unique and surely the ppl here complaining abt NS r not the pioneers. even Msia is now considering implementing NS.
y? to put our young men away? no. cos defense of the country is of paramount importance. if the country cant even defend itself and its interests, den theres no need to tok abt economy or wat... look at Israel.
singapore is much too small to defend herself purely by the regular army service or by volunteers like the US or the UK. so wat to do? implement the citizens' army. no other ways rite? we can employ other ppl to do it for us. but history tells us enuff abt using mercenaries for defense. and when we r dealing with the defense and security of a nation, of our livelihood, there r no shortcuts and no 2 ways abt it.
so look at the bigger picture. without the strong defense we have now we cant even haf the voice and the influence we can project diplomatically. we wil jus kanna jostled around, esp since we r jus a "little red dot". o cos there r other reasons for NS but lets not dwell into them.
so NS is a necessary evil for singapore
as to wat each takes out of the 2.5 yrs, it realli dpd on the individual. since its a lan lan mus serve thing, y not take it in stride and stay happy and try to learn things from it and from other ppl, make frens and so on. o cos u can choose to be sore and complain and resent and lament the whole thing even after the 2.5 yrs. its up to u wat u wanna get out of it.
but no matter wat u choose to take out from it, the main purpose of NS is still to make us all ready to take up arms and protect our country should there ever be a need to. even if u r all against NS, one day when we all kanna activated for the real thing, we wil still haf to go and fight. cos this increases the chance of survival for all. unless u feel strongly against not only NS but this country as well. in tt case i would seriously recommend u start looking for other places to go.

NS is not about the no u turn syndrome. NUTS is something that many of us have been taught since young, and it is not necessarily a singaporean trait, i'd rather call it a chinese trait, something passed down from our ancestors, if you think about it, it's kinda similar to the ancient views of fillial piety. it's not a good thing, and really needs to go, and this is something that'll take at least 1 generation to change.
ns is about national security. without defense, a country would be considered unstable, without stability, investors stay away, without investors, what fu[/i]ck economy are you even talking about?
then again, 2.5 years is really 1 year too long. looking at my friends, they spend a year training, and the rest nua-ing. watever physical training they did during the 1st year goes all to waste after.

As for my promotion, can you have any objection? You the boss? I'm sorry, my boss is not even a singaporean neither do most of my colleagues. Well, i can say i deserve my promotion due to my capabilities and of course, i seldom take leave but work hard all round the clocks = no disruption.
Did i say i am not happy? If I m not happy, why bother to get PR? Of course, who would be stupid enuff to go for citizenship when it will put them into much more disadvantage.
As for which government is better, it's a subjective question. Well, i do agree your government is better for me in the sense that they allow PR status so easily. Of course, i m earning good singapore dollars or else how can i own a car here plus so much land property and a car in my own country?
