Is our educational sys. still based on merit? If so, why do we see more indians becoming lawyers than the other races? And Y was there a quota on female doctors practicing medicine till this quota was lifted recently only?

I think it's more based on demand and supply.
We need more lawyers now because many are quitting this profession. Too stressed, they claimed.
Doctors? There are always a shortage. -
our society is based partly on merit and partly on "guan xi".
sometimes if someone likes you, and that someone happens to be a real SOMEONE, u can go far.
dun grumble if u're don't know any SOMEONEs and don't gloat if u do, life's like that.
alot of hard work, meet the right pple, and a bit of luck. so i keep telling myself that everyday.

As for the quota on women, it's purely a gender bias issue, I think. Something similar to airline pilots? -

Because indians are naturally better speakers in English than Chinese? At least that's the impression i get when i talk to indians. It's based on merit, just that Indians are naturally better ratiowise.
Think the quota is there because of women can be pregnant and not suited to be doctors. At least that was my impression.

seen too many cases of people pulling strings to get their children to certain places... depriving others who made the grade but have no connections...
besides, has any man out there heard of a son of someone high up being a rifleman or a bridging and demolition spec in their NS? -

and yup, the unis used to deem it "uneconomical" investment of educational resources in terms of training female doctors cos they leave the profession when they get married and haf children. but nowadays, females place as much importance in their jobs as their family and a smaller number of them actualli quit the profession totally for their families. so they lifted the quota. o cos the other reason is the outcry by the students who wish to enter medicine but could not and feel that its due to the quota. -

but i do know of this useless bum i knew in school.. he entered BTM in my platoon... found out how tough being in Echo Company in tekong at that time was.. 3 days after enlistment, he made a call, i overheard as i was moving stuff near the phone:
daddy.. here damned siong.. can ask your kaki to get me out from here? clerk or driver also can.. here damned siong lah...

The quota of women in medicine in NUS was started in 1979 due ot the fact that at that time, after women got their qualifications as a doctor, around 1 out of every 5 would stop work due to some reasons or another while for men, only 1 out of 20 would stop. Thus, it was deemed inefficient to award more quota for women as in the end Singapore would not have enough doctors coming out from NUS. So there was no discrimination.
But be rest assured, this quota has been scrapped i believe this year because they found that the attrition rate between of women doctors have fell to an acceptable rate compared to men's rate. -

i dunno whether u count or not, but anyway, the headmaster's son in RI is a prefect, and in rugby, the school's traditional sport. dunno whether got any string pulling, from what i can see i dun think there is, although of course we students talk

for the elite few, there will always be preferential treatment no matter which country you're in. it is simply human nature to be afraid of repercussions from higher up.
but for us peasants, meritocracy is still works provided there is no interventin from above.
dare you not say it was not because of your grades that landed you whatever educational institute you were in?
are not the jobs available now asking only for those with proper qualifications and experience before willing to even grant so much as an interview? -
