and to add to my comments, its not only about m'sia that will threaten s'pore but about the country's national security. if you will think back to WW2 when s'pore was not even thought to be in the war zone...you know the rest of the story.
you'll need to understand why ns is important and vital to our survival...especially nowadays. -

theres many arguments, but ns is important to the country esp cos when theres no military defence, nobody would wanna come invest here... -
not only economics, you'll get kicked around even more so. if not for our military technology and might, most likely we'll be occupied by now.

i think singapore's concept of national defence hinges on 'deterrence', which is there's no war.
NS does make you a changed person, mostly for the good. dunno why urlaopei is so resentful about serving the nation.. besides the money's pretty good now

i think you've gotten yourself all mixed up. you don't like it then tell it to the govt. you have a choice of not serving and go to jail and of course shaping yourself and not the society shaping you.
when you say you don't like ns, does that mean you've already served/done your full-time? if not, its too early to say that. some plus i've had is that some of my better friends are from the same unit as i am.
your thinking of national security changes and most importantly your attitude changes...hopefully for the better.
if you're to compare the "yes-sir" era and now, then you're more fortunate. anyway, i hate to think that i'm protecting some useless bum who does not even want to relate himself/herself to this country when in the first place they're occupying space here. i can't imagine when war hits home and they just run or don't even know how to handle a rifle.
stay away from s'pore by all means if you're not convinced of the ns. it'll be alot more tolerant that way. -
