Basically NS, nation defence or whatever is a reality of life, like food. Esp. in our situtation.
Sure, you can spawn tons of lyrical on why we do not have to eat food, but if you really followed your own advice, you'll be dead quite soon.
Basically, NS is a reality, it's not some nice little thing the govt. came up with for fun to waste time. If they wanted to do that, they would have thought everybody think think like you.

From the Military Nuts, and also in the Straits Times, it was reported that Japan will be building two new aircraft carriers to protect the vital sea lanes of communication.
A line that echos from the past, sounds very familiar.
Japan defeated the great Russian Navy in the late 1890's, and fifty years later they were occupying Singapore in 1945.
The resentment of some Singaporeans towards NS is their reluctance to accept that in Life there is always someone out there posing a threat to us in one form or another.
The threat may not be immediate, but it will turn to be so over time, given a new set of circumstances.
Singapore took almost forty years todate, to build a credible SAF that is respected as the most sensibly equipped Armed Forces in Southeast Asia - without any fancy items that drain our budget.
Every single piece of equipment for the Air Force, Navy and the Army will form an integrated shield that serves a purpose.
While the average soldier, sailor, airmen, and support crews may not see the big picture, when each perform his own task to the best of his personal ability, the SAF with its large population of NS men will be a credible force. -

Do China have nuclear capabilities? I think that alone would have been enough to deter any Japanese invasion.
Well, it's really difficult to say. China was in a state of mess with the KMT and Communist fighting each other and Yuen Shi Kai had devoted his efforts to fighting the Communists, feeling that the communists were the bigger threat and believed that China was too big for the Japanese to fully conquer.
Unless there's another revolution within China i doubt Japan would try anything.
And now Asia is a collection of countries whose armed forces are far more likely to fight to the end instead of being led by a foreign power who would not fight tooth and nail for soil that is only their property, not their home If the Japanese attempt another war, it would be far more bloodier. -

is that other alternative to NS how bout a regular army where everyone in it would be motivated....for money or for country
but is it a good solution? i guess not i heard a regular coporal in aus gets about 3000 aus dollars .. imagine the rise in our taxes just to support a self motivated army....
do i like NS?no..... it really depends on which unit u go... some are more meaningful then the others while some handle not so useful [obsolete] equipment and thus u dun have much "pride" in what u are doing. From personal experience they like to make u something then they dun like the outcome n u have to change it..
Courage is not just doing what u feel like... u need more courage to do something forced upon u...
A better man as an arguement for NS... i dun think so ...well it all depends on where u are n the ppl u meet. All i learnt is the important of office politics n mind u i'm not some clerk... becos ur officer or specs have more say in the office tat will mean u have less work to do lol... apart from that u get to see the ugly side of ppl
all that i have learnt is what i think i will learn when i start to work.

S'pore is secured today because of SAF to which NS is a major component without which it is inconceivable how the nation's defence can be strenghened. -

Being a citizen does not entitle you to a decent job anyway. Unless NS pay you double, then that would be a different story. I am a PR in singapore. You mean there is restriction in this forum for anyone to express their view? Think about it, Foreigner are considered first class citizen in singapore. So what is the status of a citizen then? Isn't it considered cheap labour in NS to defend singapore so as to secure the property of the riches. Who are the majority of the unemployed? most of us are logical and practical people here, so lets backwards.
to dismantle all armed forces, implies
no violence between clearly organised factions, requires
no individual violent conflict (cos individuals will get others who suppor ttheir cause and it'll become organised violence), implies
humans do not fight, requires
humans to not hate each other, requires
the world to be fair
which is logically impossible since everyone does different jobs, has different place in society, is viewed differently, and thus the world is unfair.
the only remote possibility is to place the whole world under rule of one body AND all humans to AGREE with what that body does such that they do not argue,
since arguement will lead to hatred will lead to violence will lead to armed and organised violence = armed force
however, since total agreement requires that no one thinks differently from what is the accepted norm since thinking differently means coming into conflict, especially if a significant portion agree with the different way of thinking
however,
the Bear requires that do not all just accept the norm and what we are told and the bear also wants us to think differently, yet he wants the removal of all armed forces. in my very humble opinion, these cannot happen together. . .
