Internet poll shows Singaporeans want PM Goh to stay on

PRIME Minister Goh Chok Tong would stay in power if Singaporeans could vote directly for their head of government, according to an online poll conducted by top Internet portal Yahoo Singapore.
Yahoo users were asked to tick from a list of eight ministers their choice "if you could vote for the next Prime Minister."
Goh, 62, announced on August 17 that he would step down by 2005 or earlier after the economy recovers, and named his deputy Lee Hsien Loong, 51, as [b]his chosen successor.
But Yahoo Singapore's online voters had other ideas.
At noon Wednesday, with 2613 votes so far, 41 percent of participants in the Yahoo poll picked Goh.
In second place was Goh's other deputy Tony Tan, 63, with 19 percent of the vote, followed by Lee with 15 percent. In fourth place was Minister of Trade and Industry George Yeo, 48, with eight percent.
Singapore's parliamentary system does not allow for direct election of the prime minister, who is selected by the ruling party from among elected members of parliament. Goh's People's Action Party (PAP) has been in power since 1959.
In an earlier poll, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew -- the father of deputy prime minister Lee -- was chosen by Yahoo users as Singaporean of the Year in the run-up to city-state's independence day celebrations on August 9.
The senior Lee, who turns 80 next month, stepped down as prime minister in 1990 in favor of Goh, who has suggested publicly that the junior Lee, a former brigadier general in the Singapore armed forces, should soften his tough public image.
According to a spokesman, Yahoo reaches about 500,000 Singaporeans and receives 22,000 opinions daily on community message boards.
About 80 percent of Yahoo's users are between 18 and 54 years of age, with an almost even gender split.

to do that incidentally would be infringing to politicaly sensitive parts. anyway, it's better to be in the frying pan than the fire. let's juz hope we can find the handle in the next elections... somehow, i doubt we can...Originally posted by MooKu:CLONE LKY!

Actually, the son is far more ruthless then his dad. Every rumour has its beginnings from some grain of truth. The way he handled his first marriage was a fiasco. The story abt him slapping S. Dana? Somehow i dun think it's entirely false.Originally posted by Atobe:The Son tried to be as tough as his Father, but fell flat on his face trying to be a "chip off the old block".
Now the Son is trying to be congenial, smiling, patient listener, endearing, approachable, and all niceties that one can think of.
How often have we seen someone removing the ladder once the top is reached, and the ladder is no longer of any use.
In the Politics of Singapore, it has happened once too often with the Ruling Party - starting with all the laudable speeches thrown at the British Colonial Masters, and then all the broken promises through the last 38 years of continuous One Party Rule.
Can we believe someone can hold the smile for a long time ?
When the cheeks and jaw gets tired from too long a period of smiling, then it will reveal the snarl in the toughness.
At the same time that the rumor of the slapping incident occurred, it was surprising that Tony Tan and Danabalan both quit the cabinet at the same time.Originally posted by BillyBong:Actually, the son is far more ruthless then his dad. Fact is, an internet poll can be rigged. Opinions can be influenced.
I have no doubt LHL was already the next PM.
Interesting. An emotional outburst perhaps? Somehow i doubt it. Sand dunes shift overnight. Given the fact that this recession is not abt to disappear in a few years, we might get more of these emotional outbursts soon....Originally posted by Atobe:"Don't push me, or I will dig my heels deeper. Now what prompted him to say that ? Who is pushing him to quit ?
Are we reading too much into movements in the sand ?

With such an imbecile line of thinking, I wonder if he is the right choice to be the future PM to lead Singapore over the next 15 to 20 years - in direct competition with more competent rivals in Malaysia, Thailand and further away in China, Hongkong, Taiwan and Korea.
Little wonder that GCT is polled to be the preferred person to stay on in the PM Office.
