So what if we apply that argument on that Singapore Share thingy ? Self reliance or vote buying ?Originally posted by wuming78:i agree wif wat he said: ppl shud stop asking for hand-outs every time something happens. but of cos, our over-reliance was very much due to how the country has been run since we were independent.![]()

Precisely, why blame some Singaporeans for being mollycoddled, when he and his erstwhile colleagues are the ones doing the mollycoddling?Originally posted by wuming78:i agree wif wat he said: ppl shud stop asking for hand-outs every time something happens. but of cos, our over-reliance was very much due to how the country has been run since we were independent.
Tact is one thing I will never associate with this government of ours, particularly in its dealings with its own citizens.
well.. he could have said it in a more tactful manner. in the end its the journalist who asked him this question, and the journalist does not represent the entire singaporean population.

In any case, this is your interpretation. An encouragement does not make it an exhortation. You can choose to ignore it, you can choose to read it. It is not force feeding. This happens in all developed countries. So are you saying that their leaders are tyrants too? Please this is the real meaning of having your own mind.ignoring suggestions that doesn't sound good to you and taking up suggestions that sounds good to you.Originally posted by Viper52:Heres a thought: The government can start letting Singaporeans run and manage our own lives by letting [b]grown up, mature Singaporeans decide when or if they want to get married, and when and how many children they want based to their wishes and how many they can afford. They want to let us settle our lives on certain things, and leave us to our own devices on others, according to their terms? Get real, Mr Khaw. The government needs to do some growing-up itself.
Another case of the government wanting their cake, and eating it too?

I haven't seen the government jailing ostrocising anybody who hasn't got marriedor have children yet. And yes, a declining population is a very major problem which we must face. Hell in fact Germany's government is encouraging their citizens to get married and reproduce because of this issue. So what you are saying here is a very sweeping statement. They are just being concerned over an issue..But they are not forcing anybody to do it.Maturity, yes, our people needs to mature. I have been overseas and i have seen how singaporeans behave out there and it really sickens me. How the people behave is not the government's job. It is everybody's individual responsibility.Ultimately, such decisions are to be made by the individual. The government, whether communist, socialist or democracy cannot influece them. What they can do is to raise the issue.

donm't you remeber one line in our local news that read "civil servants are not Singaporeans' slaves"?Originally posted by oldbreadstinks:does it matter?
if we have to go against the govt everytime politics come up
whats the difference? we'll just be going against them for the sake of doing so and not because we really think that way but rather , its because someone else talks bad abt our govt
but high chance of me not voting for them just for the kick of it![]()
