Actually, you should also look at the world prices of tabacco. A lot of tabacco companies are also being sued by smokers and it is costing them tons in legal fees.
Petrol cost rising and cigarette prices are two different goods.
Petrol in Singapore is one of the highest in Asia due to a high tax rate on petrol.
Cigarette prices is also due to a high tax rate and with our recent increase of GST from 4 to 5% explains the recent jump in cigarette prices.
Basically, the cost of living in Singapore is quite high. -

i won't bat a single eyelid if cigarette prices go up tenfold.
As for petrol prices, i guess its time mankind invented a revolutionary engine that does not require fuel oil to run...i.e. a non-combustion engine.
This, frankly is long overdue....it's time to put those fat rich bummers of OPEC outta business. -
i think the moving force would have to shake off political pressures...

to be honest, i'm waiting for electric cars to take off (and prices to fall). there're several models in the japanese market that i'm hoping will be coming to our shores soon. they look so much better (from a designer's point of view) than the pathetic 2 we have now.Originally posted by the Bear:i think the moving force would have to shake off political pressures...

last time they used to adjust petrol prices. now they bring the attention of drivers from the absolute prices to % discount. when the discount is taken away or reduced, it is less "heat pain" then increasing the price. Quite a good strategy. Anyone notice the recent increase in price? shell 95 - $1.2, now about $1.3. I was blinded by the big discount signs...

Well for those of you who are still blinded... in Singapore there is a cartel for petrol. Thus, the reason why its so easy for all the pump stations to increase prices the very next day one competitor does.

For such technology to exist, it has to violate this 2nd law. Which has not been broken yet.
The Second law states that you never can put heat energy for 100% into a other form of energy.
Seiko has somewhat claim that it has violated this 2nd law, which they use in one of their series of watches. The perpetual calender. How true it is is not yet proven due to patents.
So lets wait. -
I believe, by the time electric cars and hydro-powered cars supersedes petrol powered ones, cars WILL no longer be needing roads - they shall be flying.
Land can then be maximally used for more productive purposes, and pollution will cease to be a by-product of man's conveniences.
And I, my friend, will also not be around by then.. -

It is clean and economical.
Its output is bio-degradable with secondary applications as well. -
The one thing i am unhappy abt is that they increase the price with min notice and in extremely fast speed. Just like the EZlink card. This is a distinctive way tt the governments uses, a hush hush affair and to impliment it asap. Usually, we're only informed after they had pass the rule. Knowing tt we'll be helpless once the rule is passed down.

1) Oil prices are control by OPEC. There have quantities of reserves stock well before the inflation of current oil price & there sell at prevailing rates.
2) Greed, dividends are not good enough so control barrels release to control the oil prices.
3) Oil company, FYI diesel cost price is < $0.50. Do you know how much are they selling to you & not to mention petrol
4) Do you know how much a EXEC of CEO is paid in oil company....
Cigarette : pressure from non-smokes "sitting in house". I don't smoke but didn't make noise. -
