And in that last statement, Xprobe has picked out the crux of what is wrong with how those in charge view the Chinese culture and its embodiment in people like TLH. Certain people at the top have this misconception (or fear) about people who call for a greater understanding for the Chinese language and culture. Theses advocates are immediately denounced as chuvanists (not sure I got it correct either
) who favour communalism out to destroy Singapore (in fact anyone who disagrees with their views are "out to destroy Singapore" - see "SIA pilots" ). If one were to cast an objective eye on TLH's speeches and opinions (rather than letting the unbiased local press filter them), one would realise that he was merely calling for Chinese Singaporeans to understand more their own cultural roots (not advocating a return to the PRC or turning Singapore into a Chinese enclave). As for why theres this irrational fear by those at the top of such views, I believe Atobe would have greater insight into this than me.

He's S'porean...and runs Macau airport

The 40-year-old runs Macau's airport.
He took over the job eight months ago and, if he gets his way, he could be one of the few Singaporeans to make their mark in the aviation business in the next few years.
The father of two moved to Macau with his family almost a year ago to take up the post of executive director at Macau International Airport Company, which runs the airport.
Until then, the arts graduate from the National University of Singapore had never set foot in Macau, one of two special administrative regions in China. The other is Hong Kong.
He was approached to take on the post by the Macau government, the airport's major shareholder, while he was still a regional director with the International Air Transport Association (Iata), based in Singapore.
'I'd never run an airport before and I didn't really know what it would involve, but for some reason, I was chosen and I thought it was a really exciting proposition,' he said.
His wife quit her job in the travel industry to join him, and their children, aged five and nine, are now studying in an international school there.
Speaking yesterday at the Raffles City Convention Centre, on the sidelines of a two-day conference on the growing budget airlines phenomenon in the region, he said he was taken aback when he was made the offer.
'I consider myself as an underdog and I'm no scholar, so this job has given me opportunities which I believe wouldn't have been available to me had I stayed in Singapore.
'It's very different from what I was used to. Although I worked with airlines before, Iata is a non-profit organisation, while an airport is a business and dollars-and-cents matter.'

Urm, just my two cents please dont flame me
I read the whole thread before I post this, and before those posts I posted before, I didnt actually do the reading up.
While most of the opinions are against the present gahmen, nismo132 comes in to present his own perspective. Then some of us starts to flame, so as to speak. We call him 'utter fool' and and tell him to grow up. But he havent even make one personal remarks against any one of us yet.
It reminds me of the Bear's story, where his six teachers told him not be idealistic fool. The common agreement among the teachers is that one must conform, and our Bear is out of the box. We are doing what the teachers had done. While we do agree, and some of us feels strongly about this, we pushes nismo aside because of what he said. How to differentiate who is wrong who is right? We believes our points to be true, and others are flawed.
In anyway, majority doesnt win as we all had argued here. What common Singaporeans think we had argued against, same thing here. I just feel we are a tad overzealous when we readily call nismo a young kid on the block.
Give him some space. There are two sides to every coins.Like what one of us said, live and let live. If both argued out, and there are no common grounds, let each other be.
Just a sideline
What disturb me me after spending close to four months in sgforums, I seen many flame wars in various degrees. Some people just put out their own views, but were hacked to pieces by others. Their points were taken out, bit by bit, and in the end wonderfully, were labelled 'post this with hidden interest, intentions, conspiracies" and 'contradictory' and few personal remarks against the said fellow's integrity, character etc etc. This coupled with some vulgar language which I would not utter here, fascinates some, but also annoy many.
Well this is just my personal opinion, no offence to anyone here. -

His insinuation was that those of us who have chosen to leave have given up without trying. For those of us who have chosen to leave, it was not without a lot of hard experience and soul-searching, and what he wrote was insulting. In fact, it was an impetuous slap in the face. As such, I am absolutely unrepentant about flaming Nismos - he had it coming. -
At the end of it all, it boils down to whether I want to live and work for myself in which Singapore benefits or live and work for a bunch of control freaks who are still in diapers but wielding the gavel and choose to think they are greater than this country and want everyone to toe the line.I choose to live for myself..If society does not want me, I couldn't possibly be bothered..Even more so for the system...I have people coming up to tell me ..No no, do not study Arts, they'l get you nowhere in life..C'mon, does getting somewhere in life mean a new handphone every six months, a maid, three kids and a BMW? Shallow ain't it..These things should not have become the forefront of our obessions but it has..Blame it on the system which has promoted materialism to the extent so that the cash can muffle the voices of dissent because we are distarcted by the shiny baubles that can be gotten if we toe the system and not fall out of it..(OOC?) .

The entire process begins at kindergarten to high school - when politically correct information is dispensed.
While at the tertiary education level, students' political participation are carefully guided to prevent any 'misguided' political thinking.
Instead of a free and open education system to train an inquiring mind, in which debate is open, almost every activities - at the tertiary level of education - are monitored, guided, remoulded; and all from a constantly overseeing eye and guided by a strong hand.
It is only when one experience a rude awakening by some event, that one becomes aware of the futility of this Virtual World which one find oneself in.
There are some who are more dogmatic in the defense of the political status quo, are intolerant and will risk insulting every opposing alternatives.
To add insult to injury, the ardent supporters of the present system have the audacity of even adopting the mantle of their idols, in their attitude and manners, up to the point of parroting the lines.
The Singapore brain is no longer trained for discerning and critical thinking, and is carefully cultivated to be a simple bean counter - for the political safety and interest of the Ruling Party. -
Like I said, see you in 10 years.

As stated by previous posts, I agree that the education system is all about building and moulding future leaders of Singapore into a bunch of unopinionated conforming individuals.

Well thank goodness I didnt come from there..Not to say that ppl from those places are lacking in brains..Im just lucky i had the opportunity to be in a place where I was taught tolerance and respect for diversity...Not to be a cookie-cutter citizen.

Its true, I don't have a doubt that when I leave, life is not going to be easy and I have to work my socks off to succeed. But at the same time, I know that I'll be able to build for my family and me a new and better life. And that would definitely spur me on. -

Alright. On a more positive note, the reasons why most people choose to live their hometown is because their hometown sucks in their own opinion. That is why my mum left her family because they weren't very nice to her long ago. My dad left his country because he was put on employment packages in SEA, because the job market back home was very bleak. Now most people leave their hometown because they cant get employed, or they earn very little money, or because livelihood is not enjoyable.
I know from my own travelling experience that life can be great overseas if you are on employment packages. When we were in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (before), India and China, dad was provided with basic amenities; 5 Cs as an employment package from his employers. Life was very good and free easy, darn well better than back home. Its all about value people place on things, employers want people who can come up with ads, so they place high value on my dad to work for them... similarly, we place high value on more comfortable living, so we tag along with him migrating. Thus my family left our hometown, because we did not value it much at the time. But ofcourse values will always change.
