I wonder what political change there can be when power is still held by one party, ruled by the elite and people being afraid to speak their minds in public? That's why lots of people are making their complaints here as you can see. I challenge them to speak their mind to the govenment and I think most will opt for anonymity. With the government so hard of hearing, I wonder what political change there can be.Originally posted by nismoS132:i don't share any of your pessimistic views about the country and the PAP though. as much as there are problems, things are still changing, and we can't expect it to happen within a year.
10 years later, singapore will probably be very different. i foresee some political change around 5 years from now.
It is actually propanganda against the USA being an immoral and materialistic country with Satan in control! I hear this being echoed by Islamic and Christian fundamentalists and terrorists! Saddam Hussein also said that US is the BIG SATAN. I wonder how stupid they can be! US is a Christian country based on godly constitution and there is no country like it. It was started by pilgrims from England. I always liked the US and hope to work and live there. It has the largest proportion of Christians anywhere in the world.Originally posted by Lingos:Exactly true!! Look at their legal age for drinking! It's even higher than Singapore's. And the nipplegate incident of Janet jackson & JT. The total uproar it created while in Australia it was like HUH? Cool! The Americans are shocked that aussies have Sex and the City on commerical TV at 9.30pm.. boobs, butts, arse nothing is sacred in that show. It is only available in the US on Cable.
Our view about the states is so askewed by the American trash TV and movies that we devour so hungrily.
France fertility rate is 1.92 (year 2003, source: INSEE)Originally posted by nismoS132:this is not a uniquely singaporean problem, but a problem commonly faced by those in developed countries. look at japan, france, germany.
it's simply a by product of an industrialised lifestyle, where people are more concerned with materials needs than their mating instinct (sex and having kids is different).
oooooohhhhh...Originally posted by Viking1:France fertility rate is 1.92 (year 2003, source: INSEE)
It's almost the only country in Europe that increases its population thanks to relatively high birth rate from mainstream French people. Germany on the other hand increases its population only thanks to immigration.
It is obvious that France's policy is very favorable for having chidren. First, schools are free, health care is well covered, it won't cost you S$4,000 to make your wife deliver in an hospital (it will cost you ZERO). And then you get monthly subsidy for each child until they become independant.
ST, it's more about qualifications and experience and whether you've got job skills that are required. For example, the Australian immigration department regularly updates and releases a list of occupations on demand, and this not only covers degree holders but tradespeople such as plumbers and chefs too. If you've got the points, the money isn't of much relevance - I completed my application without ever having to mention the money that I haven't got anyway. Basically, as long as you've got enough funds to live until you get your first pay, you're fine.Originally posted by SingaporeTyrannosaur:Sadly I don't think I have an egress plan from Singapore in the future. I believe my role and place is to hold the fort here for certain personal reasons... not that I have had too much of a choice anyway. No money.
gotta be easier to leave earlier like me right? less things to put down...Originally posted by Gedanken:ST, it's more about qualifications and experience and whether you've got job skills that are required. As for closing off your role in Singapore to go somewhere else, that's the tough part. More likely than not, there will always be something happening or something that you will have to do, until you hit a point where you go, "Okay, that's it - got to go NOW".
Hmm no it's not a dreamy state there are big problems too but I don't understant why Singapore does not try to tackle the birth rate issue. I mean it's obvious that in a place like Singapore the COST of raisong a child is a problem to many couples. And it's not like Singapore cannot afford it, the government is rich.Originally posted by HENG@:oooooohhhhh...

So what is the strategy ? Increase immigration ?
Precisely my point, they mind-condition us to a point that we perceived the opportunity cost of getting out of the system to be so high that we silently grumble and willingly succumb to their govern.Originally posted by Devils_advocate:Oh man! What is there to elaborate on what you said ? No facts, nothing of particular interest, just ramblings.Originally posted by Gedanken:Care to elaborate? If you've got different experiences with the French, please feel free to express your opinion, but don't go doing the one-line-wonder thing.
Ok tell me Dedanken... what French attitude exactly are you talking about ?Originally posted by Gedanken:Why roll the eyes then? Unless you've got something to say, which now you say you don't. Pot calling the kettle black?
