HAHHA.. i think it's cos they are high maintenance. wow....acjc are angels/gods wor....
my sis is frm acjc.
*phew*. actually, i do think that one problem with Singaporeans is that they are TOO grounded in reality. Like a recent article in Streats commented, few people down here actually have any aspirations. anyway, let's get back to the real issue...Originally posted by CX:bah... its tedious to keep talking about the same few points. in case u haven't noticed, i already retracted that earlier statement when oldbreadstinks found it objectionable.
i don't care to comment on the "validity" of your points... if ur friend say they make sense then good for u loh... they certainly don't seem gounded in reality to me. and that's essentially why i find them 'duh'... am too much of a realist.
anyway, this thread isn't about the other thing we were talking about. its much closer and many young pple can relate to it... so... what does wearing that white uniform mean to u?
me? i'm totally sworn of snobbish idiots like that... they talk loud, but they don't seem to have much between their ears. so their claim to elitism is to me, tantamount to building castles in the air.
there are many facets of educatrion, just as there are in society. if you can influence the individual in the right way, obviously he will choose to follow that way if he is influenced enough. that way, there is a 99.9% chance of preventing the problems from occurring. anyway, you are partially right as well: to solve society's problems, you would have to change society as well.Originally posted by SingaporeTyrannosaur:Education can not solve socieity's problems, while you can influence an individual in the right manner in the end that individual still has his own free will to decide if what he's going to do. There are quite a number of educated and high brow people in jail.
i partially agree witj you on this. except that the elites out of ACS and RI and RGS and the likes, the more english schs, are more arrogant n such. darned chinese high people are just plain nerdy, most of them, what an image... geez.Originally posted by Sardaukar:Thank god I come from the 1 school I feel that is not elite but does not have neighbourhood status also.SJI.
No offense lah fellas but truly, some of the students that come out of the "elites" like ACS,RI,Chinese High, etc.,a lot of them are highly, how u say one,"STUCK UP ASSWIPES".there,I have said it.
Most of the people from the elites I have met tend to be nice people but maybe thats because of the friends I keep.
SJI is not elite thankfully, for then we would be arrogant and prideful, which some Josephians are.All the same, every school will have its sections of the stud. popn. who are arrogant pricks. It is a reality of the world we live in.You will have the arrogant elites who will spit on the peasants and soldiers, thinking themselves best until reality checks them.
There is an NS saying from a certain platoon, translated roughly from Hokkien-"Chee bai!run up this hill, kena got higher hill to climb.."
The "elites" who feel themselves so superior will come to realise their real worth. To the govt,we are all statistics that help make Singapore the economic powerhouse that it used to be.For us guys,we are statistics to scholar generals who don't fight real wars and who assume they can throw us into a meat grinder in the inevitable war with either Indonesia or Malaysia.
Anyway, its human nature. You will have your asswipes and your nice people.
To these walking bananas, everything remotely Chinese is "Cheena". Hate to break their hearts, but a quick check on their ICs would reveal to them that their race is Chinese.Originally posted by HENG@:i partially agree witj you on this. except that the elites out of ACS and RI and RGS and the likes, the more english schs, are more arrogant n such. darned chinese high people are just plain nerdy, most of them, what an image... geez.

hehe, im from the top school, and most pple there are racists too, though perhaps mild.Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:I'm from one of the top fifty schools. Almost everyone is Chinese. Everyone is a bloody racist. Even some of the teachers join in.
Viper.. so i guess you're chinese as well? I'm what you call a walking banana and a potato mucher. At the end of the day, i walk into an interview in Melbourne and guess what. They can't pronounce my name cos i've always had and always will ONLY have a Chinese name. Lingos, you misunderstand my point. I'm not against anyone having an English name, and my post was not aimed at people having an English name. I'll be happy to admit I do use an English name as well. And yes, I am Chinese, but with an English educated background and a whole lot more comfortable using English (spoken and written) than Chinese anyday. However that does not mean that I eschew the Chinese language and culture and am too ready to denounce it. Despite my background I'm proud of who I am.Originally posted by Lingos:Viper.. so i guess you're chinese as well? I'm what you call a walking banana and a potato mucher. When I completed my O level prelims, i was a 25 pointer. I went to a pre-university, which is not as glamourous as a JC. Whatever few friends I did have, 1 english educated Chinese middle class guy, 1 2nd generation Eurasian guy, looked down on me because they went into JCs, Meridian and SAJC respectively. These 2 'friends' did not return my calls, and they ignored me and did not accept me as readily as they usually did. After the real olevles came out, i was a 10 pointer, they scored 12 and 15 respectively. Suddenly they started accepting me again. Something is seriously wrong with your society.
It raises a crucial question about character-building of our top students.
You people must do something... instead of fleeing. But then again what can we do?While the education system can produce excellent engineers and scientists, can the same be said of raising potential leaders who are sensitive to societyÂ’s needs? This is a prime example of what Singapore believes education is, pieces of paper with As and more As, but no characterisation or honour. Economically there is no time for people here to work on "people" skills. This goes hand in hand with your country having to conduct ad campaigns to "encourage Singaporeans to Smile", this got me and my friends laughing in arrogance, REAL Arrogance, not your education politics kind of arrogance. They lend weight to an observation by some foreigners that the new generation of Singaporeans is arrogant and self-centred.Aye, look at what locals do at fast food outlets with their trays.According to her, some Singaporeans, with their superiority in English, tend to look down on Chinese nationals.
What superiority in English? Most Singaporeans cannot speak properly, in terms of sentence structure and the way they speak. E.g. Cha: So what kind of books do you read?
Local from SAJC: Like tat lorrrr....
Cha: oooooooookaay
a lot of people from so called "under achieving" schools have a fixed mind set that those from "over achieving" schools would definately be snobs. as such, would not even bother to get to know person.
what we need is a revised religious educatiion syllabus that removes the conversion part of religions. that way, we can teach pple morals and get them to apply morals in their daily lives.Originally posted by men_@_arms:Why should we stop at bashing Raffles JC? Every SINGLE school in Singapore is at fault for "educating" the average Singaporean in this depraved way, the MOE is also at fault for organising the system so. ALl this shit stems from the annual school rankings, you have top 10, top 50, top 100 etc etc. The mindset of students being pompous, arises from such rankings. Last year Raffles may have been the best, followed by ACJC, then by Hua Chong, Chinese high etc etc, as you go down the list, you will see an air of superiority one school has for another, like a giant food chain cycle. With one supreme School at the top, e.g. Raffles... by the time you reach the 178th or 192th placing (however long it is), you may have "Chee Chiong Fun Junior College" students feeling superior to "Serangoon JC" because Chee Chiong Fun JC is 110th place and Serangoon is 111th place. (These are just examples).
However much I bash your system, i cannot offer a definitve solution to it. Perhaps more CME? But your culture has not much interest in it anyway, its a studying culture, a competitive one, one which only sticks to your own kind, not wanting to mix with others, expecially foreigners. But I believe, however flawed the culture is, it needs TIME, for a start, the system has to be less stressful, so that people will have time to develop empathy. E.g. IF you are in a hurry for work, you may be uncivil to people, and not really care because you are in a hurry. Likewise for school work, likewise for school ranking and uncivility in general. Its all connected. For people to rectify their faults, time is needed, you will never have time if things continue to be so hectic. But then again, you will never let things run smoothly or slowly, because otherwise your competitiveness will fall, thus you must continue this cycle, afterall, its the people who suffer, not the policy makers.
yup, there is.SJI!I have faith in my old school. Some of the mission schools may have lost their direction, but SJI still produces good quality manmeat for enriching the genepool of Singapore.Originally posted by CX:oh yuck... u're a josephian turd... yeah... not elite, not really mediocre, just plain arseholes
forgive me... your school-mates have tarred the image of the school on your behalf... but take it personal... i have a strong opinion about almost everything
u know... come think of it, we all have some fixed, stereotypical image of educational institutes in singapore... i.e. THEY ALL SUK...
the top schools breeds elitism, the gov't schools breeds mediocrity, the mission schools seems to have lost their direction (no thanks to enlightened MOE directives)...
is there still a place for our young to LEARN?
