I don't buy it too. Are they refering to PR from M'sia, China? Other then those......who wants to live here? Expat in my company says Singapore is stress & boring. No life at all. They will leave within 3year max even with all the benefit company are paying...long leave + long home vacation + etc. -

My friend has been to Sg once with me. He said that he will not move there even if i paid him lots of money.
I think they are talking about the expats who shop in Tanglin Supermarket (if it still exists) and drives their company car to pick their kids up from Overseas Family School or International schools. -
gahmen give them more incentive then own ppl (citizens)
No tax - that is why they often take long holidays, breaks, home leaves.....
Housing/school fees/cars - paid by company & can be claim tax...

Why do some singaporeans think that expats are bad for the country? If you look at the bigger picture, foreign companies come to singapore and setup HQs and offices to do business. They will hire Singaporeans and also bring in more investment and capital into the economy.

i think it's just fear that their jobs are at stake. But the expats won't be there if there are people who are able to fill that role anyway. I mean what company would want to spend additional expenses for relocation etc. -

Unlike Americans, Singaporeans do not mind competing on the same level with expats for a piece of the pie, unlike disgrunted American workers who feel it is their right to turn in lower quality work then their Indian replacements, and get paid many times more for that.
However the problem starts when the Singaporean is badly hamstrung by the cost of being a Singaporean, no thanks in part to a great number of gar'men policies that make it inpratical for them to compete on an even playing field. What then can the local worker do? Especially when the very system that milks and hamstrings them blames them for pricing themselves out of the market. Something's gotta give. -
ST is absolutely right, however theres another point to make here. I have to really admire how the gahment, through its propaganda machine, is able to blur the lines and confuse the real issues here.
Theres nothing wrong with hiring expats to bring about abilities not present in Singapore, and I fully agree with that. However as ST has said, what the gah'ment has done is to cheapen the value of Singaporean citizenship and PR by allowing an influx of arguable 2nd rate low cost labour to supplant Singaporean workers to "make Singapore more competitive", when it was their policies in the first place that made Singapore and the Singaporean worker uncompetitive. They are trying to reverse their initial policy mistakes with a policy that alienates and trivialises Singaporeans. The dissatisfaction Singaporeans feel is directed at this influx of cheap 2nd rate foriegn labour, not the expats.
As usual, "Gah'ment make mistake, ordinary Singaporeans pay"
What the propaganda machine has done is to lump "expats" and "cheap foreign labour masquerading as talent" together, and make it look like our dissatifaction is being misdirected.

Well this expat will be gone in 3 years max, so there will be one less expat for your problems. And if I gain power, I will deport all British Citizens back to England, where they belong.

Foreign Talent as to invest in our country or to increase the country economy is just fine with me. Yes let's look at the bigger picture, mnc invest, create jobs but then gahment give better incentive like tax reliefs, grants, R&D funds.............at who's expense? These saving mnc benefits will be directed back to their origin...which is not Spore. Their saving, our expenses....
Do we really have no talents...were local given the opp? Gahment alway put it's own ppl down.....how about all successful local bussiness man? Are they by chances or luck?
So they want to invest...they press gahment to low cost....so cut yr pay.....flexi wage....
If I am MNC, since wages if peg to Co profit....all I have to do if direct my profits to my own origin, inflate my booking for operating cost in Spore, procurement in Spore, invoice else where.........so who will suffer......u & me bro.........u & me r suckers............... -

i know an italian who makes a conscious effort to speak slowly so pple can understand him better. i know a croatian who does the same, cos if they speak normally, u're lost. they'll have italian, croat, and goodness knows what else mixed in.
then there's this Irish guy... i always end up having to focus and strain my ears, cos they speak really fast... or the londoner who speaks cockney... whoa!
its just arrogance on your part to claim that "wogs" speaks better english at any rate. many know that they need to slow down to be understood and singaporeans make an effort to listen carefully to avoid embarassing misunderstandings.
