The ostensible reason is that homosexuality works against the morale of combat units, since each man will have to count on the others, and vice versa, and it is felt that homosexuality is likely to create a trust issue amongst many of the men.
Also, conscientious objectors are placed in non-combat roles. Ironically, I know a Jehovah's Witness who became an armourer during his NS.
