A government who wants to, and thinks it can, manipulate and micromanage every aspect of Singaporean's lives in the name of "national interest".
And a great majority of the populace who either happily lets them, or b-i-t-c-h-e-s constantly about it, but lack the balls to do something about it by refusing to submit or voting with their feet. Instead, all the government has to do is to give a miserable ERS bribe and these sheep will happily vote for them.
panja is right, Singaporeans DESERVE the PAP. At least, most of them do. -
So some of you say the govt is no good.Yes, I agree.Our leaders don't lead the ppl. They only govern the country.We don't even have a ministry of culture.

the problem is the PAP system, not the PAP pple. the pple can only be blamed insofar as they have bound themselves far too much to the system which their predecessors created eg. Ngiam Tong Dow, Goh Keng Swee, LKY, etc. the system of course, cannot be expected to change on its own, but it has so easily controlled the subservient massses and govt officials, subservient to it, that is. And that is sad. like someone else said in another thread, Singapore is being ruled by the MNCs. i would like to add on that the Statutes of Singapore are ruling everyone, even gahmen officials, unquestioningly (with absolute power). ironically, the only pple who can change the system directly have been shunned to one side: LKY's team is retired, JBJ has been defamed through Defamation suits and so on.Originally posted by panja_v:The problem is not PAP meh? In the begining, everbody accepted that PAP had to do what they did; betray their communist friends, put them in jail, suppress them because you know communists lah, give them power all die mah.

Luckily, Goh Keng Swee and the rest already left, so their name remain fondly remembered...

Actually he could have got away and resigned after his son ascend to the throne, but

It is ironical that Singaporeans deserves the PAP - only because of the stupidity of all Singaporeans continuing to vote for the PAP.
Yet Singaporeans are not stupid for not voting for the SDP.
Is SDP too good for Singaporeans ? -
We don't have ministry of culture because the PAP govt doesn't know the definition of "culture".Does SDP know?

The recent 2 collapse of worksite show that many ppl don't do their work properly and poor mangement.I think this is a main problem of our society.

All the fault lies in PAP! Why they never give the opposition a chance? Yes,the opposition fail in the past but that does not mean we do not need opposition! Look at US system with 2 major parites.
If one party cannot do a good job,other parties will capitalise on their fault and improve and modify. Just like M1 and Singtel. Always try to capitalise on each other weakness and improve with better deal to seek the best for us,then the party will improve,system will improve too!
What PAP do! Shut down all opposition,introduce GRC and let one party do all the things which he think is best! If the system which he feel is the best for this country fail! The party will just keep quiet and he may not even know the fault and continue with what he think is best that will lead us to destuction!

Without a credible opposition,PAP will never raise their standard.

anyways the othr prob with singaporeans are their lack of identity.
how many times have you heard comments such as "if singapore were to go to war i'll flee firsrt" or.."i'll migrate after gettin my degree(though the notion is encouraged by our govt)" or "s'pore no life" etcetra et ctera..the list can go as long as thge nicoll highway(minus the collapse)
the need for identity is impt in evry major nation..without this very fabric of belonging the citizens would cease to be nothing less than occupants.
in fact it is the job of the elected political party to imbue this sense of belonging..
take a look at the elections in indonesia or taiwan.
yes it is marked by various violent activities but nonetheless the nation responds, the people participate in such vigour though they be radical. they feel for the country and thus the party that they choose to associate with.
beneath the multitude of violence and disorder we can see a colourful nation full of passion.
we don't see tt in singapore do we..haha

And we are in a democratic nation, right?
So explain how come we are suddenly so smart as to vote for them?

Unfortunately because of GRC system for last election. 77% of the zone is uncontested and automatically went to PAP! U called that we vote for PAP? I was in the uncontested zone! They create GRC to stop most opposition from contesting in most zone as they know their popularity had drop! U called that democratic?

my point was that either
a)Most people are idiots, thus they would not have voted for the PAP, since PAP thinks idiots will not be able to make the right decisions.
How is it possible for idiots to make the right choice and vote for them, the elite few who are destined to be our leaders?
or
b)Most people are actually smart, and then they would not have voted for the PAP either, seeing how much
PAP has screwed up in some areas.
or
c)Tyranny under the guise of Democracy. French revolution comes to mind --- Napoleon's rule.

eugenics policy, democracy is quite their adversity... so they made use of it, trojan horse if you may. -
Regarding the consistent walk-overs the PAP has claimed, it is probably due to the sad state of the opposition in our country.
Firstly, opposition members are usually stero-typified against, as they are believed to be marked members, and are usually targetted against (political attacks), and hence shuns people from joining the opposition, preventing an expected swelling up in the numbers, in direct proportion to the dissatisfaction with the government.
Also, the continual remarks by certain political figures putting down the opposition as "unnecessary", and "irrelevant", or "are trying to sow discord", have certainly not helped matters. People are wrenched away from the alternative viewpoints, as biased media reports portray the opposition in a bad light, while continually giving the PAP prime news space (perhaps they can help it, perhaps they can't; after all, it now is the main political party in Singapore).
If we want a robust and free opposition in Singapore, the only way to do so is to get more activists who are truely aware of Singapore's wants and needs to join the opposition, provide a true voice of reason, and more importantly, solutions to the problems facing our country. That is the only way for the opposition to regain it's credibility in utilitarian Singapore. -
I would like to see a more democratic Singapore even though our country look democratic... Next is the poor command of language tat make Singaporean hard to compete with other countries...

What's disturbing is that while we may have a democratic system, yet our democratically elected government has a monopoly of power which controls every facet of life in Singapore to the point of rooting out any hint of dissent. All this is done in accordance with the law and of course the government makes those laws.

Absolutely true that our over-structured and over-controlled society have produced wooden Singaporeans. It's not only me saying that, even Hongkies, Taiwanese and Chinamen all think so too.
Our managers cant make important business decision with overseas clients. The seige mentality is " MUST REPORT TO BIG BOSS FIRST, let him decide!" How come we are this way?
Just take a look at our political system - it is typical of an over controlled society. Which MP or minister or trade union chief dare seriously challenge or oppose Government policy ? -

The blame should'nt fall entirely on Singaporeans at large. If you need to point fingers do take a closer look at our Government policies, structures and control.
Have we achieved ourselves a united nation, a closely knitted-one -voice-nationalistic people? NO! We cannot lay claim to have succeeded as one people one nation. Right now, it's the Government prospering while the people can only watch and salivate -because they will never get to taste the enormous wealth of the Government.
Making billions is NOT considered a national achievement - especially in Singapore's case.
Taiwanese, Koreans, Japanese - they all developed and created their own society and national unity. If their Government tries funny policies on it's citizens, the entire population will go on the streets to protest and make themselves heard. Do we have enough standard to compare our wooden society with theirs

Of course,the cause of the problem might be due to the system.
