I felt good about the present Government years ago - but not now.
It boils my blood each time I think about the S$14 billion dollars HDB made from us. Because we are still struggling to pay off our HDB loans - and my retirement prospect is dreadful because of this big bill !
Question - how much money did PUB made all these years? Or is this another state secret? -
basically i share with you what people of the earlier generation feel and told me.
basically during the formative years the PAP was for the people simultaneously cementing their power. After the communists, barisan socialis were gone, that was when their stranglehold of power came in.
However in this day and age, i quote the female MP (whatever her name is) that her constituents of that generation, have "betrayed" them, the unemplotment, CPF cut here and that.
if you understand power, the PAP has two objectives, party survival, and secondly governance of the nation. whatever policies they have so far implemented, i believe were carefully formulated and delibrated such that like what most people say, resulting in a servile society. my personal feel so far the governing part is not too bad. clean streets low crime, no gang violence. However, like some have mentioned, it reeks of corporatism and dynasty politics.
if yo really think when singtel and M1 compete, consumers gain, think again. Can anyone just search for this link (i forgot about it). it listed how most of our most commercial assets are actually owned by members of the gobvernment and from the family.
To answer the question on what i think is the main problem of society, I feel that it is probably that the country we live in is small and artificial plus there is no national pride.
PAP is able to exert such tremedous pressure on its citizen is because we are only so big. As it is onlyso big, it doesnt really inspire people in terms of the Arts, literature and what have we.and lastly, there is no national pride. Our soccer team sucks. our most global thing is probably Sun Yanzi. in a survey conducted like 3-4yrs back, the Irish were said to be the proudest people in the world in terms of national pride kinda stuff. They have U2, the Corrs Irish Stout as well as james Joyce. the symbol of our misguideness and lack of national pride is probably either Sentosa or the Merlion. How can people lead dignified lives when there is no sense of national pride or when they are slaves to the machinery?? -
Problems-
1. inconsiderate & selfish people, very kiasu, queueing for anything free, bochap attitude
2. Cost of living very high. Prices of everything increasing except wages.
3. Lousy education stressing the kids & the parents
4. Nothing done for the middle income people who are sandwiched between looking after aged & kids
5. Everyone caught in rat race, no time for other leisure activities -
There is nothing radically wrong with Singapore society.
For most people with jobs in Singapore, life here is relatively hunky-dory compared to other countries.
City living is stressful in all cities, not just Singapore. There are ungracious people everywhere. But there are also gracious people everywhere. Singapore is not an exception.
Political life in Singapore is far from perfect, but we are evolving as only a young nation is evolving. There is no perfectly democratic country. Let's not benchmark ourselves against the mature democratic countries of the West.
Do not blame the world or the Singapore government or your fellow citizens if you have troubles in your life. Are you sure the problem does not lie in yourself?
Live simply and consume less. It is easier to become happy that way. -
I find it hard to have a sense of pride and belongning if I cannot even afford a simple thing that all people in other country mostly can. A simple and humble decent piece of land to call my own. Remember the old chinese saying about soil. Thats the main problem. Only the elite are entitled to them here

- why are we paying $150k for 90msq 4 room flat where barely 10 years ago, it cost $100k for 106msq. it count add up to 70% increase from 10 years ago. are our pay, increase by 70% from 10 years ago? in fact some of us even argue, we go paid less compare to 10 years ago.
- try talk to some uncle in their 40s or 50s. during 80s , early 90s, very easy to make money in spore, now. dont talk about making money, barely surviving to meet end needs.
4 education.
- how many of you singaporean been force to pay higher fees to study in oversea because you are deprive of a chance of local education. why? are we not qualify? no because not enuff vacany in local uni. why? before SMU, many opening in NTU and NUS are occupied by Indian from india, chinese from china, Malaysian from malaysia. because they pay high fees and some even FOC because they are talent and we singaporean or second priority.
4. And end up like Phillipines? University Graduates working as maid here? Nowadays, there is already too much University Students who clearly are not good enough. That said. There are also those who are good enough being rejected from University. The entrance criteria needs to be reviewed.
