But it seems this forum page is becoming more popular and most of the users more eloquent.
That has to bode well for our future, even if it is merely a start.
2 years ago, the number of topics were pretty small and new ones were hardly available. Then again, the gahmen may have handed us the initiative by dangling controversial issues in front of us rabbits just to see our response? A plan within a plan?
Then again i'm probably one of those mel gibson wannabes who drives a cab and types those conspiracy theories in his sorry excuse of an apartment...
But just so you guys know...i'm glad. -
It takes one small candle to be lighted, and more will follow.
When a whole dark street is filled with the glow of more candles, we will soon see the potholes that have always been tread over without any thought.
With more light being litted on this street, we will soon see where it came from, and where it is going, and the conditions and repairs that are needed.

Amen, look at my join date. And in that time, I've seen this forum blossom into a very intelligent and tolerant forum (with a few exceptions) with the exchange of a lot of fresh and interesting ideas and viewpoints without the childishness and flame wars that plague other forums of a similar nature.
It is very interesting to note that when the Sunday Times publishes views from the Internet, views from the Speakers Forum is one of the ones where the URL is never published in full, rather, a simple "sgforums.com" is used. One can only imagine how difficult it is for a new surfer to find Speakers Corner among the multitude of forums in sgforums.
Maybe someone up there does not want the majority of Singaporeans to know that not all who do not agree with the Ruling Party are screaming monkeys? -

More voices can only be better, a marketplace of ideas.Its much better than having one man's stream of consciousness which starts out as a nurturing stream, then loses control and is now flooding our neighbourhood with trash and unwanted problems, floodwaters have a habit of destroying the property of those who got rich from it..It sounds very metaphorical, pardon me.

Indeed there are more participants in this forum now.
However, it is still a pity that on some occassions, temperatures still have a tendency to run slightly beyond control, leading to the original main topic being deviated into subareas of personal arguments.
All too often, internal killing among forumites often overides a thread the moment just when we are about to see a diversified range of ideas and opinions slowly accumulating.
The above of course, can sometimes be the result of some nonsense posted by an occassiona racist, extremist or mere lunatic.
And sometimes that can happen too - among some of the more regular or better informed forumites.
And this is indeed a great pity.
Coincidently I was also reading thru one of the threads in here when a forumite by the nick of 'lyling' brought my attention to another more important thing.
In her post, Lyling didn't really emphasised much on policies, theories, or models nor anything that reseambled anything pretty much academia about her views concerning a baby related issue thread.
Yet what I find so valuable in her post - was the fact that she had effectively given and communicated thru, a realistic picture of real world circumstances have impacted onto the lives of the primary civilian core.
Differing from Lyling's post, all too often the 'normal' posts would comprise and emphasis more on hypothetical contents - though I have to acknowledge that there are also a few whom had based and contributed their post on facts that they felt was bona fide and unbiased to the reading public.
As an observer more than contributor in this forum, I realise that much of the threads lack such 'realism' contents.
While I do not know everybody's own personal agenda for being involved with this forum, what I do feel is that those who chooses to - You care and give a damn about what is going on in this country.
You hold a concern about the people and you want genuinely wish for both the country and people to improve.
That alone - makes you unique and respectable in your own class, and there is definately no need for another to squash your ideas or belief down though different, so long as the posts are made in a responsible and bona fide manner in the best interest of both your country and people.
Okay I've finished with my long winded post. You guys can come and 'squash' me now if you want.

I think times of dissent arrives with economic uncertainty. With older generations, they were more or less guaranteed a good job once they graduate. Remember when graduates were held in high esteem?
With economic uncertainty, people start looking at the political situation and seeking loopholes.. Or maybe in these times, the loopholes appear bigger than it normally is..

I think that is because in the past very few people are graduates. Now who isn't ?
