Strictly speaking, a poly cert is better than a JC one
However if a JC student went to degree, degree is better.
If poly people also went to degree, then he is the same level.
Sad to say in life, there must be some selection
If everyone, actually now it seems almost anyone, get a degree, then wat is the point of a degree ?
Every country also practise selection too... the selection is on wat university u had entered. Those good students get into good U, those lousy one get into lousy U and in the end lousy U cert = ... well... poly cert... -

Creativity is something personal and it's difficult to teach, but with environment, personality and other factors - it can squeeze more of the creative juice out from someone. Academically people are usually the least creative among all because to be academically smart you have to FOLLOW your text. My artistic directors, my shifu and everyone else, I think cannot make it in books, but they are damn fcuking creativity and talented.
There is no glory in following/copying - there is only honour in creation and conjuring.
Knowledge is limited, imagination has no boundary. Usually people who are good at hitting their books, are civil minded. They rely everything on rules, order and an organized way of doing, but what if reality doesn't give you that route?
Luck depends heavily on opportunity, intuition, gut feel and even karma.
Networking refers to people you can work with to achieve certain career objective. People with higher EQ will have stronger networking power, but higher EQ usually suffer in terms of productivity. (Empathy is good for personal relationship, but not so for work. That's why the sh|t people are usually the higher management)

In life we can't have everything - people who chase paper, have to sacrifice something else in return. They sacrifice either one or more of the three points above. In the end, if anyone who wants to succeed, it has to have everything above - so the joking piece of paper isn't part of the essential criteria to do damn freaking well in life.

Just to add on... if everyone get into poly and not into JC, then in poly level there will be comparison as which poly is better or wat class he turn out with.
If everyone get into degree, then degree have class to split into levels and there will be signs of more people getting master or phd.
People want to compete... if all go into poly and all just return with a poly cert, no splitting of class no splitting between different polys, then everyone will become lazy and strive to just pass, not aiming for A's in the exams. -
we only have 1 form of secondary education institute, unlike japan where it's split into 3 years of junior high and another 3 years of high school. does that mean students are getting complacent and not striving for As in their O levels?
if we were to abolish JCs and put all students into polys, the 1st thing we need to do would be to revamp the poly curriculum, rather than split the schools into 4 faculties, let students have a choice of what subject from which school they would like to pursure during their foundation semesters, and begin specialization later.
for those unsure of their future, they could pick general subjects like business and marketing, IT, networking, circuitry, electronics, design. once they've found something they like, they could then go on to begin their specializations.
remove the fixed 3 year routes. go the semestral way, each student is to complete their diploma in a given number of semesters, say 6-10. to attain their diploma, they would need to attain at least a certain number of credits for their major studies, be it business, engineering, IT, research or design. -
heck we might as well merge the 7 tertiary institutes* together under 1 name and call it Polytechnic Singapore, where each campus is for a certain specialization, like say the Republic Campus in woodlands for biotech and research, Temasek Campus in tampines for design, etc.
all foundation courses will be conducted in Nanyang Campus, so students who've yet to find their calling will not have to travel all over the island.

and to make things simpler, after they've attained their diploma, they can choose to pursue another 4-6 semesters of Independant Studies where after completion, they would get a Bachelor's Degree in Independant Studies (Multimedia Animation).
for those that don't know, independant studies means you select a project or field related to your area of study, and attempt to do a deeper study and attain a better understanding of it. throughout your 4-6 semesters, you will set your own milestones and deadlines, the lecturers will be there to guide you along should you be lost, and provide you with help and equipment, point you out to samples for research, or materials.
there will be some classes, but most of your time will be devoted to individual and group project work
let us attempt to create a real education for our future students. -

Yes, i agree that JCs do help to incalcute a "mental ruggedness" in young singaporeans.. train them to be tough, disclipine, determined workers... But does the about mentioned traits guarantee that a JC grad will be more skilled compared to a poly grads, who recieve ab 7 yrs of skills training ( 3 yrs in poly, 4 yrs in uni) ????
Really hope that the gov will further relax the criteria for diploma holders to enter local uni more easily... since Mr Tharman had said, " singapore wants different types of students " ----> i presumed he meant the academically gifted type and the practically gifted type
Jc ppl out there, we poly students certainly bear no grudges haha... we just want to have a say at our own kinda education systems i would apologise if i had stirred up any kind of emotions in u all -

Being too specialised have its own problem...
if tat industry sinks or float, u sink or float with it.... Like the internet bubble which burst few years ago... u will be at a disadvantage in finding jobs if your degree or something wrote "Internet management" or something (tat may be no such courses now but wat I meant is when education becomes too specialise)
second if u realise u do not like the job tat comes with your specialization, too bad tat should be your career for the rest of your 30+ working life...
I guess a bit more broad spectrum is not tat bad.... -
ppl go jc for 3 reasons parents force dem to(i know of such people) they wan the easier route to university(local) to prove that they are the top 25%
ppl go poly for 3 reasons personal preference (eg.. they prefer the environment...etc) dey know what they wanna do in future and work towards it they cant make it to jc -

Today in Chn i's "i contact", mr Tharman talked ab singapore wanting different types of students... i presumed that he meant having this 2 types of students: 1) academically gifted, 2)practically gifted... So y can't the gov allow more poly grads to make it into uni then ? since they have the intentions to develop "different types" of students ? right ?

But frankly, I donÂ’t see how people in our batch can merely rely solely on what we have learnt in either uni, poly or jc to sustain us of 30 odd plus years in the working world.
From the pace of change all around, itÂ’s probably more realistic to say that what we learn from school can only keep us relevant with the environment for the next 3 years.
Anything over that and we are on a reclining path unless we go on and acquire new knowledge.

not necessary true.. if say i only have psle or o levels but i working for 5 years in the same industry already so alot of exp, take courses to upgrade(but wif no certs, jus upgrade knowledge n stuff only) would they give me the job as compared to a fresh graduate? that piece of paper, still plays an impt part in sg no matter how u detest it..Originally posted by weidev:basically i feel tat papers do affect but in a limited way...

if u have no degree... but lots of experience... and upgrade urself constantly... i feel u have a better chance to be employed den fresh graduates who have no experience...
i think if u go JC but nv make it to uni, when u go for job, the employer will more likely go for the poly grad cos poly ppl more hands on n likely to be more mature... -

i feel so too.. after my Os, i dun even noe wat should i study in JC to get me into Uni for the job or course that i wanna do... i just feel all those subjects are not really relevant.. if u studying business..does the subjects u study in JC help? afterall, i chose to study in poly.. cos immediately, i saw the course title that lead me to wat i want...
n somehow not all JC students are really that good, some cant get into Uni.. so wat u think? i noe they did their best.. but reality is cruel..
i feel most impt is doing wat u like.. dun need to care whether JC or poly better... nothing much to compare.. -
Actually it doesnt matter much...... both will have a chance to go to a foreign university when they graduate.... if polytechnics were a class below jcs, Id rather migrate!!

i've discussed with my brother, both who is and were JC kids and we come to a conclusion that if you want to leave your choices open as well as a better chance at uni, choose JC. If you want at the end of 3yrs a job and a low chance of going local uni, choose Poly.
the risk is that those who have poor results and go JC ending up with non-Uni entry results either repeat or have to do some private course. This are the people that we have left out. after your O's, you made a decision, poly or jc and as a person you should stick to that decision. Everywhere, there is a majority of polytechnic students who have a subconscious feeling of inferiority hence this forum topic. Let me tell you, its just a feeling, IT AINT REAL. Even so, amongst JC people, there are the real class above the rest , namely the scholars. i believe that Set your goals right about your education and career and don't be paranoid -
hmm. in what way is a poly student a class below jc students? I dun quite get it.
In terms of getting a job, a poly grad will definitely earn more than a jc student who juz gradguated. And moreover, even if the jc students make it to uni, nowadays, uni students are struggling to find jobs oredi. The job market is not optimistic at all. Moreover, it is possible for the poly student to upgrade her/himself and take up degrees or other diplomas etc to make themselves become more valuable to their company.
