Frankly, i think it's just a load of crap. i understand the necessity to get people of different races and creeds to work together, but why can't they get people together to, for instance - help improve the facilities of old folks' homes, etc ? wouldn't that be so much more useful ? What good is a giant piece of cloth to society ?

i think its a big wayang lah... it tries to be a physical manifestation of a national identity, but it just ends up as a bad mix of propaganda and self-serving rhetoric...
singaporeans just prefer to keep their feelings to themselves. i personally don't see a piece of cloth as representing my patriotism and my indomitable singaporean spirit... i think me working hard for my future here is a better representation of that...
if i'm so free to send in a hundred pieces of handmade cross-stitch, then i no need to work ah?
does that make me a patriot?

Allow me to take you back to the 60's, that is as far back as I can start.
Those days, economics was poor. One of the things we could not afford was a good, warmth, quality blanket to cover us during our sleep. Our parents would gather pieces of cloth leftover, cut them into regular shapes(usually squares), machines them together and then we have a blanket over us.
Sometimes it takes months to complete one such blanket. Reason maybe 1)you need to collect enough unwanted leftover cloths 2)hand-stitched(because could not afford a machine) 3)having to work, cook and take care of the children and parents.
In the end the blanket looks like a rojak of colors and pattern and even cloth material. But it does serves the purpose of covering ones during a cold night. Of course this is no comparision to one of high quality wool blanket.
One other chance you may get a wool is when, after a funeral you are left behind with some towels and blanket. Some clans send decorated blanket with messages of condolences to the bereaved family instead of floral wreath.
The Fabric of the Nation I would see is a representation showing people from all walks of life coming in together contributing a little warmth to those in needs during the SARS outbreak.
It gives us a visual reminder of the outbreak, how anxieties reigned then, how we came together to fight as one against a then unknown and unseen enemies and how some fellow being succumbed to the deadly diseases in the course of their work serving the sickly.
You must not view the exhibits as a piece of visual arts but feel the warmth that it could provide one. -

maybe its cos i'm just cynical and jaded, but i just don't see such a significance...
it just seems like a damn bo liao thing to do.
now especially, with all that news about non-profit orgs and charities going belly up, isn't more meaningful to work towards helping these groups who are working for a noble cause rather than putting together a pathetic blanket to exhibit...
that blanket is just a pretentious feel-good artifact that does not in any ways provide warmth for the many who ARE in need of REAL help.
even the "courage fund" who was introduced at the height of the sars period was diverted to goodness knows WHAT ends...
can we in good conscience say that the blanket is "symbolic" and "meaningful"???
the entire effort is questionable... i have no doubt that many pple involved in it worked with pure hearts and noble intents. but in reality, the effort is as commendable as a giant mooncake made for show...
the difference being that one might donate the mooncake to the needy or the elderly as a gesture of goodwill and charity, but what are we to do with that piece of rag? cut it up to make loin-cloths? -
Just a symbol to represent something.
Happened ever since there were humans on earth. And it's not science. There are no reasons sometimes. -

in any dictatorship or regime, the national monuments are very grand, North Korea, Iraq, former USSR etc and the people suffer.
In singapore, we have new and grand national monuments and some people enjoy some people suffer.
And then we have an exercise to sew these pieces of cloth which are supposed to sound like the bonds that hold the country together. ha ha.
Tell me what you think honestly. to me i think its hogwash.
The government in running Singapore Inc should follow the example of corporations give a stake in the Country to the people.
After all the monuments, all the high salaries and these pieces of cloth how much is there left for the people?
To bind a people together, make them feel accepted, taken care of and led with passion. Dont give them crap and ask them to admire pieces of cloth.
