Is chinese important in the near future?

Everybody knows China will be the next super-power in the near future. And SM LKY has said it's very impt for Singaporeans to have strong chinese foundation. But why the drop of importance of chinese in the 'A' lvls?

i dun care wat MOE is doing
but i know tt Chinese is important to me cos it's my root.....
and it's a disgrace not to know ur own culture and language (regardless wat race/country) -

then now uncle lee say ebery year mus groom at least 200 chinese experts so tt they can tap into the potential chinese market.....let them work in ministries as bridges and contact points for china.....

A lot of ppl dunno that the paper, pharachute, gunpowder was originally invented by us Chinese...Dunno the power of our race and Chinese intelligence....

The idea of compulsory mandarin learning was envisioned by our dear leader to ensure Singaporeans go enmasse to work in China when China opens up.
That never happened. Today, less than 20,000 Singaporeans are working short term in China - more than 2 decades after China opened up.
Our government's promotion of Speaking Mandarin has nothing to do with culture or tradition. It's only a smokescreen, it was done purely to make more money in China. Period. -

But I also think that because we have so many races here, english muct really be the one language that can allow everyone to understand one another. U realise that there is really not much emphasis on Malay or Tamil.
If China is opening up, then when about India when it too becomes an economic power later? Do we then need 200 people who will become "very familiar" with India and their culture?
Being bilingual is never enough! Look at our parents' and our grandparents' generation! can speak so many different languages - dialects lah, malay lah....we are already way behind them, and there are still people who think that being monolingual is all that matters! Being multi-lingual is best, not just english and your own mother tongue!

yes its impt. but the things our government has chosen to do about it is making me feel uncomfortable.. mandarin elites?! anyway finally they have admitted to ELITISM, wich has been running along their thoughts and actions all along. and this current policy(s) regarding china is so the same as wat they have been doing all along.

Important or not does not matter.... Tell me which English man dun speak English. I cann't think of any. But you want to name chinese who dun speak Chinese, in the garment we had one maybe more liao

aiyah, last time Uncle Sam sibeh powerful, so they put emphasise on Engrish, now Asia Dragon awakened so they put emphasise on Chinese. Soon when India also wakes up, then they will encourage u all to learn Indian and 'wannacum' more as well.

My husband who studied Malay is learning Mandarin cos he does business in China. It is useful even in Japan, at least u don't get lost & can order food in HK if u can recognise a few Chinese characters.
