  our service time is so long because s'pore has the risk of conflict with our..errhhmm..neighbours. for european countries, with the formation of the EU there's really no reason for them to fight amongst themselves, nor do they face any threats from their neighbours. we do. as for south korea and such, their population is bigger hence they do not need to serve for such a long time. hope this is of some help

  NS doesn't stop with ORD..... One have to serve until 40 years old (For men and specialists) or 50 years old (For officiers)......

  The Singaporean army was helped formed by the israelis back then . Israel is a small country surrounded by hostile muslim states - scenario familiar anyone?
  So Singapore , I think , requested for israeli help. Hence national service came along. Why no women? Because Singapore doesn't have much hostile states around but Israel is surrounded and grounded by the hostile states like syria, iraq, iran, lebanon etc.
