Well it also depends a lot on what youe diploma is? I went to study a general biz diploma and it ain no good at all. Of course you can command a good salary if your diploma is in a specialised field. As for proving capabiltiy, must start from scratch. How many local guys can remember what they study after the army?!?!? -

in the early 90s, the starting pay of a poly grad (engrg) is about $900 - $1000.
I had average results and found a job in instrumentation $1400. better than my COM friend, found desk bound job $900. Of course, it was hard work, with hands dirty, under the sun, into humid tanks of marine vessels.
With OT, i took home almost twice of my pay.
But for the situation now, it will be hard for new grads to accept low pay. As a student, already many are driving, if not riding to school, handphone, and plenty of spare cash to spend.
dont say $1400, give $2400 also not enough.
this is how you spent your $1400.
Take home: $1120
Allowances for dad & mum : $250
Transport : $200 (bus & MRT)
Makan : $300 ($5 / day)
Savings : $200
Investment (4D, Toto, SAYE, etc) : The rest
What you get 10 years later : PRICELESS

I don't think the Gahmen is going to impose a minimum wage level. It will damage the economy. Profits of firms will fall, hence prices will go up.
Companies will cease to hire new workers. Unemployment will go up (although inflation will go down as a result of higher unemployment). Present workers will have to do extra work.
With higher unemployment rate, social problems will also escallate.
Taxi drivers will face extra competition from new drivers. They will work harder for longer hours. Accidents rate will increase. More people get killed on the road. Population drops. Gahmen's tax revenue drops. Budget gets unbalanced. Gahment increases GST. People suffer. Taxi drivers gotta work harder. More accidents on the road. Lagi lower population. Gahmen's tax revenue drop further....
Wah, the ramifications are serious. You sure the Gahmen wants that?? -
