anyone read the article some time last week on TODAY or STREATS by a reader signed with [Sian Kong] as his pen name? I searched the internet for that name but could not find out who he is!!!!
he wrote that those taking part-time degrees completing in 15 months' time are taking short-cut and are deemed as Mickey Mouse Degree......
he had forgotten some bosses who employ full-fledge degree holders from NTU and NUS are primary-6-education holders like ChianHu Quarium boss, Kenny Yap, etc... -
Ever count the number of scholars among our entrepreneurs?
To me Singapore's scholars are waiting to be employed because they are fait-accompli - degree, grades and all.
Who employ them at the end, who give them jobs? - non-scholars.
If this is the truth and truth hurts so be it.
How many scholars can really come out and pay themselves from their own entrepreneurship that kind of monies government is paying them.
It is such a surreal world - Singapore scholars are really living in cloud nine.
It is not their fault - government policy never got changed that is all. -
to be frank, it is a fact that gov ministries and stat boards only value full-fledge NUS and NTU lor.....those NUS and NTU grads not performing also auto-promoted to a higher level.....*sigh*
they plan things while mickey-mouse-degree-holders do the ground works.....*sigh*
still in most forums, most ministries' and stat boards' dare not commit themselves whether how much they recognise or value part-time degree holders. Their replies, I am tired of reading the same old things leow, are always very generic:- "our staff appraisal system is performance-based and we don't just look at the academic qualifications"
Bull-shit man!!! they always answer that way to cover their own rice bowls and also to paint a beautiful pictures in case our ministers or pesident are reading the forums....
and mind you, they have very high level of hypocrisy man....the level where no one can feel they are telling lies......*honourable butt salute to them* -
Sad to say, many s'porean (employers and employees) value the local degree more than those achieved part time.
Dont they know that entry requirements for both NTU & NUS are so much lax than 10 years ago.
I was not able enter to NTU or NUS bcos I am not the top of the corps in poly. No money also, so do my NS, start work, got married.
Out of my busy scheduleand armed with some savings and "advice" from the government, went to take part time adv diploma, later was accepted by UNC thru PSB for engineering degree but found too expensive $30K plus. that would drain my savings by almost half. also need to keep for rainy days and baby (still working-help government mah). So chose a arts degree from another academic agency.
yes, the arts degree (mgmt) took 15 months to complete, but please understand there is no semester breaks and there are only 20 contact hours for each module with the lecturers. The rest relies on the course guide issued, text books and reccommended texts and extra readings by individual. The exam take is similar to the campus.
So dont deny our degree and term it mickey mouse or whatever. We obtain it with sheer hard work and not luck or dime. -

he was not talking about pple who have no degree and have succeeded... nobody denies that these guys deserves our deepest RESPECT... degree holder or no.
kinda talking cock when u say that no degree = no success cos hey... guess who the richest man in the world is... everybody knows that bill gates got no degree... he's a drop-out.
the point the author was ORIGINALLY making, is that there are pple who STILL perceive a degree as a direct route to success and are taking "short-cuts" ... what he calls "mickey-mouse degrees" , to get there.
if u got no degree, proud of it and got the success to show for it, i say "hats off to you, u got lobang for me?

the author is right... pple who go thru the normal track take 3 to 4 years FULL TIME... time to read, think, digest and assess. the academic rigour is quite substantial.
the author might be over-reacting a bit... but his point is quite valid... there are degrees, and then there are degrees... -

but it would not be wrong to be concerned about how well the candidate had absorbed the course material within such a short span of time, with so little consultation and so little contact hours.
a knife cuts both ways... there are candidates who are able to manage their time very well, and learn very quickly because of work exposure and their ability to relate the course to their work, or cos they've seen the materials in their work before.
but there are also many who are just fudging their way through and it is difficult to see how a school offering a private degree programme will be inclined to fail their students easily... its frankly bad for business. -

Open - that is all.
From the 2 elite universities, top talents will eventually be drawn to become top civil servants, politicians and great leaders.
The same thing is happening to elite schools and JCs. Only those top 5. No more no less.
Open univesities are to produce talents for industries - this is a matter of destiny.

KNN if i graduate from a renowned Aussie group of 8 uni and Singaporean employers still term my degree as "Mickey Mouse degree", i will pack my bags and go other countries to seek jobs. And it's not 15 months by the way, it's 24 months cos i got a year exemption.

Anyway, if govt dun value me, private enterprises will. At the end of the day, also depends on whether u can do the job or not.
As for taxing-wise, i dun mind coming back to get taxed since Aussie taxes are higher than Singapore's.
