Wouldnt someone from a foreign country feel more native and welcomed, if they heard their mother tongue being spoken. Just as u would, if u are in japan, india, africa, europe or america and someone spoke mandarin, when ur onli mandarin lingualistic.
The auntie's rationale may just be a form of courtesy.

But if you look at it from the English language, both are completely acceptable. In fact, it depends on which one is the noun. In the case of Singaporean, I think we prefer Singaporean to be the noun and Chinese to be the adjective rather than Chinese being the noun and Singapore being the adjective.
Basically, it depends on whether we want to be known as
Xin Jia Po Hua Ren
Or
Hua Zu Xin Jia Po Ren
Both are correct. Singaporean probably prefers to be known as the later for corret description of who we actually are.

the original author felt awkward because he was afraid to be mistaken as chinese national (oh the horror!), i am just saying there are ways to express that you are ethnic chinese but not chinese national.
