Then the next person will post +1 which means me too ! Plus another person.
If another person agree, he will post +2 which is me too ! 1+1 =2 So 2 other person are happy

Well.... reading is no problem for me. I read both Chinese and English books myself. Love all the Jin Yong's Novels, Luo Guan Zhong's San Guo Yan Yi, Ni Kuang's Wei Si Li etc.... Also Read Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton etc.... Writing is a lot harder. Still remember the old style of learning written Chinese. Homework is to write that same character a hundred times each. Anyway, please don't "use one bamboo stick to knock off a boat full of people". There is no doubt that Singapore has quite a few Singaporean who do not know or hate their Chinese roots. But if you read the other thread, you see that there is a lot of us here who do not like those people too. This is a country that is being sandwich between the east and the west. With this kind of environment, there is always people who goes to one extreme or the other (both too western or too eastern is not good I think). The best is to intergrate and use the best of each. The world needs to more forward, while not forgetting how we get here. -
Singapore english (not always singlish) is actually rather unique and makes for interesting study. Listen to our leaders in parliment, you will notice that their linguistic skills are very good, yet no one can accuse them of speaking British or American English. That is good Singapore English.
Singlish is used for internal communication, just like a local dialect. How many singaporeans would speak to foreigners in Singlish?
In fact, I would appreciate it if someone can tell me the meaning of good english... Who are we comparing against? The cokneyed (sorry, I do not know how to spell it) or the American's English? Maybe against Australia's?
I believe that the standard of language in Sg is still above average, understandable by people from other countries yet displaying a distinct local flavour. -
Even america and british have differences in their accent and english. How to judge which is more superior ? Do we have to imitate their accent in order to display good english ? To be blunt... I know of some people who purposely try to imitate america or british english, but to a disastrous effect...
Some people here really do not know chinese even though they r one. However generally speaking the people here know chinese well. I guess a general impression from chinese is tat singaporean can't speak chinese well at all. However when I or some of my friend use chinese to reply, the chinese people new to singapore will be shocked. Generally speaking, singaporean speak and write chinese better than chinese or japanese speak/write english... -
