16% Petrol Discount gone after NDP

just when they announced 16% discount when oil pipe lines were bombed, i wondered why...especially when NDP was around the corner....now it is back again (6%).....no wonder so many people out there over the holidays........
imagine nobody out there during the holidays....heeheeeee......i know i can read their mind.... -

1970s saw drastic cost increases due to all kinds of taxes supposedly levied to control traffic congestions. These cost increases were road tax, parking fee, car park surcharge, ($60 per parking lot per month) vehicle registration tax (170% of C & F) etc.
When COE was introduced in mid 1980s, it was supposed to be the final pricing mechanism to control road usage but by then road taxes, car park surcharges, vehicle taxes and petrol duties were already drastically increased. The minister announced that after this all earlier ad hoc taxes would be reduced progressively over a period of time.
With COE bidding going up to as high as S$100,000, isn't is only logical that the prior tax increases such as vehicle taxes and petrol taxes should be withdrawn or reduced correspondingly to avoid double charging? Has the minister kept the promise not to double-charge now that full ERP is finally implemented?

You have raised a good point. Shd send it to ST forum. If by any chance it gets publish in the newspaper there will be wider discussion on it. I agree on the part on double-charging.

It is okay. You win some you lose some. Some previous letters of mine to the press were published in the ST Forum. I agree that to bring up issues as stated in the above-stated post, it has to be re-constructed to gain editorial acceptance for publication. However, such letters touching on HDB prices of Spartan Vs Athenian system of governance were few and far in between. They were selectively published. The window is open a crack at a time to gain a semblance of openness.
Michael Backman an Australian journalist wrote an article published in Today sometime in 2003 on the press self-censorship. He was slammed by the MITA for interfering in our internal affairs.
Foreign interference may be undesirable but have we ever thought carefully : is there a merit in his criticism on our lack of freedom of speech. Our quality of governance is what we make of it. If people don't have a view and have to let foreigner point out what is wrong on our behalf, who is to be blamed at the end if we are to experience problems we are experiencing today.

When the nation celebrates, it always boosted about leadership without realizing the the S$14 billions HDB surpluses and annual off-budget surpluses were contributed by the ordinary people.
Sigh !! it is going to be a life of bondage and suffering without recourse. Perhaps, sending a letter to Steve Chia is not a bad idea at all as he is more willing to speak up in parliament. -

i still feel we need some control lor....
i am pretty comfortable with the ways things r published..........very positively painted and articles are censored at the right amount......
i had spoken to Mr Ong Keng Yong (former Press Secretary to ex PM Goh.....very soft spoken gentleman........ask him about press censorship stuff and he will tell you there is no actual or realtime censorship or direct government interference from the government with regards to press publication......
press censorship is solely based on the experience and maturity of the editor and blah blah blah.....
