Think before i post indeed. Well, it seems u ain't thinking much when u post either. Firstly, do u know what is banking legal reserve ratio? By decreasing this legal reserve ratio, banks have more freedom to lend money, which is considered as an example of liberalising the banking sector and i dun see how the FTA is related to this.Originally posted by CX:the banking sector was liberalised cos of the Sg-USA FTA... not because of his enlightened economic mind...
truth be told, the standard of our local banks are NO WHERE near the standards of American banks who have acquired an international presence.
the sensible thing to do is actually to protect them until they can really compete effectively with them...
but with the FTA, u are forced to let US banks in on equal terms and compete before the local banks are ready. i am certainly switching my bank account from screwed up DBS to Citibank very, very soon liao...
this is not his fault, but not his credit either. so think before u post.
Good in Mathematics doesnt make a person good in politics as well, good in Maths and good in politics are two different things.Originally posted by cooleo:Lee Hsien Loong is a brilliant individual. I'm sure his dad is proud of him. Even his Cambridge professor states that LHL is the best student that he has taught in terms of Mathematics - no on comes close. For an alpha maths grading, he got 31 and the second is a distant 19.
While serving in SAF, he invented a calculator for missile fire range, putting his good mathematics skills to good use. He also excelled in operations deployment during an incident.
As for his performance in politics, he has proven to be an analytical leader from the way he took charge of MAS. Liberalising the local banking system is an example.
I vote for Liu Cheng Qiang or Chiam Chee Tong!!!Originally posted by thinkloud2004:I throw up my hands (and legs) in support even at the expense of incurring the wrath of many here. Propose to me one fella who u think can be a better PM for our country. Speak up man. Don't simply whinge.
Duh...didn't i explain how he took MAS under his control and created a more cohesive environment in banking sector? This is just one example. I can list many others, but i guess i should leave u to read the papers and find out for yourself.Originally posted by drawer:Good in Mathematics doesnt make a person good in politics as well, good in Maths and good in politics are two different things.
whats the point of comparing if we're going to compare ourselves with a weaker target?Originally posted by cooleo:Think before i post indeed. Well, it seems u ain't thinking much when u post either. As for American banks being better than local banks, do we have to be ashamed? In terms of size, we are of vast difference and it is stupid to compare apples with durians. The least u can do is pick an Asian bank and pit it against local ones.
Before u shoot, try to process what u are going to say thru your brain first.![]()

Now i know how authors for jokes books get their inspirationsOriginally posted by CX:we are not comparing apples with durians...
we are comparing Sg apples with a very big and juicy US apple...
in banking, u are either there, or not there. if u're not there, u dun stand a very good chance competing with an established global player.
and why would i compare with an Asian bank??? they don't stand much of a chance competing in Sg even if we signed FTA will all of ASEAN...
but american banks can come in and totally trash the local banks if they don't shape up.

Is your judgement of LHL based entirely on papers printed by Singapore Press Holdings only, or also from beyond our shores ?Originally posted by cooleo:Duh...didn't i explain how he took MAS under his control and created a more cohesive environment in banking sector? local papers have mentioned that due to opening up of the local banking sceneOriginally posted by Atobe:Is your judgement of LHL based entirely on papers printed by Singapore Press Holdings only, or also from beyond our shores ?
Is the local banking scene more cohesive since MAS took over, or has the local banking scene left Singaporeans with a less competitive choice now ?
If the situation in the local banking scene has improved, why are Singaporeans now forced to pay for charges that were non-existent before LHL took over MAS ?
